Hope you're not getting on Route 3 East

Friday, June 27, 2008

Okay, local Baristanet citizens. I know we've got bigger news on our hands today than just some traffic, but this one's pretty bad.

As of sometime before 8:40am this morning (when I passed it), it appears that a chunk of overpass or the wall of the underpass some cargo from a truck (thanks, MISTALUKE in the comments!) has fallen into the right lane of the highway where Paterson Plank Road crosses Route 3, right near Secaucus. I haven't been able to confirm via Web or elsewhere yet as to exactly what it was, as it could have been dropped cargo, etc., but it is right under that overpass. Here's a Google Map for you:

In any case, it's an absolute parking lot Eastbound, even backing up the exit 16W ramp onto the service road that merges onto Route 3 right before the river. Here's one shot I took a few minutes ago.

Actually it was a dump truck overloaded with steal I beams. It tried passing under the Paterson Plank Road ramp, and didn't quite make it. So its just the cargo of the truck, but I'm sure they'll have to do some safety checks on the overpass itself.

My Decamp 66 bus passed it just moments after it happened. And thanks to clever commute, everyone warned almost immediately. Once again, hats off to Conductor Josh!

It was a Martian invasion. Don't let anyone tell you different. Conductor Josh, please spread the word of this invasion because I need the day off: the dog just ate my homework for the third time this week.

Thanks for the tip, MISTALUKE. Super helpful. I wasn't absolutely sure as I zipped by (for once, no real gawking going on WB) but I didn't see any traffic on the overpass, so it was a possibility. Needless to say, it's gotten disastrously worse - a colleague just informed me that he passed Clifton Commons 45 minutes ago, and it took him that long to get to Route 17.

Jeepers, by dumb luck I waited for the bus and took the train because it got there first.

I passed that this morning at about 8:15. I thought it was part of the overpass too. Glad it was just cargo.

... and I am once again reminded how happy I am to never have to drive on that road in rush hour.

I drove west out Rt. 3 around 10:30 this morn. By that point the eastbound lanes were backed up all the way to point where the highway curves north just before the GSP interchange. Yikes. That was bad.

Oh, don't be so smug, GNM.

Sorry 'Roo, but after driving on it every day for 5 years to and from my old job, I still get the jitters when I see a story like this...

Then I remember that I now work 30 minutes West of here (in "rush hour" conditions) down Bloomfield Ave.

Okay, I guess you've paid your dues.
