Looking For Maggie in Montclair

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Our beagle Maggie just broke loose from her walking leash near The Fairway and Yantacaw Brook Park. She has a red leash trailng behind her and has on a red ID collar. Please call us at 973-951-4150 or 973-744-5775. She is very shy! Thanks!! The Foleys

Broke Free, or wiggled out? Beagles are smart. Maggie probably just wanted to explore- obviously not entertained by the 6ft of freedom you've given her with the walking leash

I hope Maggie is found soon! I think we may have met her at Brookdale a few times in the past and she's a very sweet dog.

jimmytown--what an obnoxious comment.

I really hope Maggie finds her way home soon!

An obnoxious comment indeed.

My wife had a beagle named 'Skippy' that routinely tunneled under her backyard fence to roam the neighborhood and dine on garbage. He'd return home a couple of hours later with his gut sagging from God knows what the heck he was eating.

I know, first hand, the stress and worry that accompanies a pet gone missing. It's tough and anyone who makes light of this kind of situation, obviously has never had this happen to them.

I predict that Maggie will be found in short order and returned safely to her owners and as far as neighborhoods go, this is not such a bad one to go missing in.

Posted by MellonBrush | June 25, 2008 3:50 PM

Wednesday,7:30 pm:I hear from the Foleys that Maggie is still missing. If you're in Brookdale Park tonight, keep a look out!

Posted by Annette Batson | June 25, 2008 7:47 PM

I dont keep a leash on my dog. I dont have a fence. The dog stays on the porch and doesnt walk away. If the Beagle was stolen that is one thing, but the dog broke out of her restraints and took off. Obnoxious? I bet you have a frog in a mayonaise jar with a leaf and a stick to "recreate its natural habitat". Dogs are the most loyal species on this planet, and if one was to run away from you, its a reflection on yourself. train your dog, and show it some love. this is not a "poor owner" case at all

" a frog in a mayonaise jar with a leaf and a stick to 'recreate its natual habitat'."

What does that mean?

Posted by wayne robbins | June 25, 2008 8:05 PM

I didn't see her in Brookdale-- just there with the little prof.

We looked....

Hope she's found soon. And safe.

(And jimmytown, the law requires that you leash your dog. I'd bet luck has more to do with your good fortune in not having something dreadful happen to your dog....)

Posted by profwilliams | June 25, 2008 8:07 PM

Jimmytown - it's a long way down from that high horse of yours. You'd be naive to assume that you can predict the behavior of an animal 100% of the time. Let's hope your dog never catches a scent or gets spooked one day and runs off. Of course, you'll have no-one to blame but yourself for being irresponsible.

Really, how DARE we leash our dogs?!

Posted by Dachsrule | June 25, 2008 8:58 PM

Please help us to look for Maggie! We have been searching for her all day. One lady said she saw her going into Brookdale and we have contacted all authorities. She is a very special rescue dog, we are all heartbroken. She may be hiding in a yard or near cover since she is very shy small dog. As for Jimmytown, it is very sad to read your comments. We accidentally dropped her leash while out walking this morning. It could happen to anyone and we have helped to return other losts dogs on many occasions. We kindly ask for everyone's help. Thank You. The Foleys

Posted by Magic Number | June 25, 2008 9:13 PM

Magic Number - are there any command words she may recognize if called out? If anyone were to spot her, it might be useful to know if she responds to a particular word.

Posted by Dachsrule | June 25, 2008 9:21 PM

Maggie was found late this evening by my son!! Thanks Annette for helping us so graciously with the postings. A special thanks to the lady who called to say she spotted her near the Brookdale Park entrance. Great people here in town, we'll be sure to keep on the lookout for other lost pets!! The Foleys

that's great that you got her back....give her a big hug, and some dog goodies.

always nice to hear happy endings.

I was heartsick when I read that Maggie was missing.I'm so glad that she was found!. I have three great dogs
(one elderly but still spry) and would
need a suite at Bellevue (only half kidding!) if one went missing. Since I travel for business (every other month or so -- often to London) I always tell my beloved husband that if anything happens to the dogs on his watch he should just move out before I get home (he gets it and doesn't seem to to take offense at this. Again, he's a good guy). Our almost 17 year old keeps a keen eye on them too. I work at home and have a big backyard but I do walk them too; dogs can slip even the best leashes (and not because they don't love us and their home). As for Jimmytown's comment-- I suggest that he looks for his heart. It must be there somewhere. I feel sorry for his dog since he obviously isn't worthy of this, or any dog.

I just woke up and checked this post. I'm very happy your dog was found. Good news. A happy ending.

YAY! This scenario could have happened to anyone. I am happy to read that Maggie is back at home.

Good news! I will dance with a Labrador in your honor.

Excellent news!!!

The little prof and I be looking for him at the dog run (as we admire the lovely water fountains......;)

Thank goodness!

Give Maggie lots of hugs and kisses and I mean lots!

We have 3 dogs who've gotten out of the fence a few times - the pack leader LOVES to play ball and will get out to join any kids playing in her sight. The other two linger on the driveway, confused about their freedom as they know the treats and dog food are back on the other side of the fence.

In Vermont we don?t have a fence and they don?t ever run away ? they love to explore the woods, and they LOVE to sneak over to the dairy farm where there are all kinds of new smells.

Jimmytown your comments make me think your dog is the unhappy one, does he have any personality or just sit at your side in fear like a teddy bear?

Posted by hrhppg | June 26, 2008 9:22 AM

hrhppg-
Very happy. We go for runs and long walks through Eagle Rock. We swim in the ocean and run on the beach. Girlfriend has a dog and they play well together. Im at both dog parks when we get free time, and the dog plays well with others. Im not saying he just stays on the porch, because he does roam around the neighborhood, but always comes back. (One instance a lady picked him up, brought him to Teanack, only to read the tag when she got home.... And yes I was worried so I do feel for people who lose their animals.) I am just fortunate to have a well trained dog that always comes back. I came off a bit insensitive, and I apologize for that. But the outcome was as I expected (Dog was found.. not too far from home after hours of being missing) Dogs are smart, you dont always have to keep them restrained and caged in

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 9:33 AM

jimmytown, I am still a little worried by your dog owning attitude. If you live in the rural countryside - having a dog roaming free is one thing, but here in Baristaville where we have trains, De Camp buses, speeding cars and more hazards, it is a worrying idea that you think that your dog "will always come back".
My neighbor used to have the same idea and their exceptionally well trained dog still managed to get under the wheels of a car, while chasing a cat, and the driver was pretty injured.
It is not only for the safety of the dog that they should be leashed or in a fenced yard. I say let the dogs run free.. in a dog-run, beach or the woods, but not loose around the suburbs...

I am so pleased that Maggie came home, hurrah!!!!

I'm so glad to hear that Maggie was found.

Posted by Nellie | June 26, 2008 10:13 AM

I run on trails frequently, and it is my pet peeve (pun intended) when people allow their dogs to roam free. When I see an unrestrained dog walking down the path towards me, I don't know that is just jimmytown's friendly porch dog. I see an unfamiliar dog coming at me. I would be very upset if I were walking with a small child or my dog and saw a random dog running around. In this area of the country, in today's society, dogs need to be leashed or fenced.

Posted by chicken | June 26, 2008 10:14 AM

I agree with Chicken. Everybody who knows me knows that I LOVE dogs but same thing here: If I'm out running and see an unleashed, unfamiliar dog, I get scared. Is he friendly and just wants a pat on the head? Or is he gonna bite me in the ass? People in my running club have been bitten by unleashed dogs in the park or on the Wessex Trail. I don't blame the dog, I blame the owner.

Also, if you don't leash your dog, he or she can run after a squirrel, run out into traffic and get killed. This happens more than you think.

Posted by Miss Martta | June 26, 2008 10:22 AM

I had a dog that was run over and survived.

It was snowing very hard and must have been about 10" already.

I was moving a car across the street so I could shovel some more and he ran over to me a the precise moment that a car was coming. I screamed "Nooooooooo" and then heard a thud. Somehow since there was so much snow on the street when the car's wheel passed over his body(all 25 pounds of it) it pushed him down into the snow and squirted him out like a cake of soap in the shower.

My wife saw the rear wheel of the car pass directly over his body.

He lived for several more years after that. It was truly a miracle.

Posted by MellonBrush | June 26, 2008 10:37 AM

Mellon - had I been you wife I would have dropped at the sight of that!

Posted by hrhppg | June 26, 2008 10:51 AM

(every other month or so -- often to London) I always tell my beloved husband that if anything happens to the dogs on his watch he should just move out before I get home (he gets it and doesn't seem to to take offense at this. Again, he's a good guy).

Wow, you are quite the catch. Did I mention that I often go to London, because that is important to drop in the conversation. So Sad. does your dog wears a sweater?

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 10:53 AM

Also, if you are afraid of "roaming dogs" and dogs can get hit my trains and cars, why make the exception for cats? I find Cats serve no purpose in society, and would rather see them locked in a cage or tied to a tree... You cant argue one without the other. When I walk my dog (without a leash) he sits on every corner (happily) and crosses when I cross. You think that dogs can't be controlled, and in most cases, you are right. Not everyone can do it, and Im sure you are good at other things

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 11:00 AM

"I find Cats serve no purpose in society, and would rather see them locked in a cage or tied to a tree... "

Sure they do. They provide companionship to millions of people. They rid domiciles of vermin. They may not be as 'useful' as dogs but they are marvelous, beautiful, mysterious, ancient, intelligent creatures, nonetheless.

Posted by MellonBrush | June 26, 2008 11:13 AM

Jimmytown, you must not be a cat owner. I have three cats at home that i keep tied to my clothes line outside, and they are wonderful creatures.

to each is own

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 11:19 AM

Congratulations jimmytown! Not only have you enraged every dog lover in Baristaville, but have now started an attack on cats... what is next? babies?
tell me... what "purpose in society" do YOU serve?!

p.s My dog has never worn a sweater... and as a further p.s (p.p.s) I really didn't get your London reference.

Unfortunately, there are some posters on this blog that like to jerk peoples chains.

They are probably the same assholes that ruthlessly demand obedience from their hapless pets.

May God have mercy on their pitiful souls.

Jimmytown, my cats would like to see you locked in a cage or tied to a tree.

Cats are beautiful creatures that should be considered on the same level as dogs. Cats are beautiful, lithe, and loving animals that truly touch the soul.

Posted by Nellie | June 26, 2008 12:02 PM

Cats fundamentally sit and ponderall day, jimmytown (usually with their eyes closed and their breathing slowed). Like Buddha. That they do not subsequently share their great insights with the likes of us is probably because they long ago, as a species, dismissed the likes of yourself as unfeeling, crude yobbos and mistakenly think the rest of us are like you.

But we're not.

Posted by cathar | June 26, 2008 12:06 PM

Mellon Bush-
I see I have touched on a sensitive subject with you, but your choice of words are over the top. Asshole? C'mon now, And what does this have to do with God's Mercy! It is true that we all disagree with how we raise our pets. I am confident that I am right in my position, and Im sure you can justify your way of living too.
Brit- Don't get me started with Babies. Ugh, talk about keeping something on a leash! Probably not necessary though, since kids these days pose no threats; being that they are so coddled, overweight, and their fragile "everyone is a winner" self esteem

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 12:09 PM

Society directly links women who own multiple cats to have emotional, personality, and social issues. FACT! Defend them all you want, you're still a crazy cat lady

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 12:14 PM

Better to be a crazy cat lady than an insensitive clod.

Posted by Nellie | June 26, 2008 12:19 PM

No its not! I can keep my mouth shut and pretend to care. There is no hiding a crazy cat lady. you can see it in their eyes, find it on clothes, and of course their home.... litter boxes, dry food, urine stains, furniture scratched up, dead birds and mice on the doorstep. Im guessing you dont do much entertaining

Posted by jimmytown | June 26, 2008 12:23 PM

Guess again!

Posted by Nellie | June 26, 2008 12:26 PM

Jimmytown, now you're just getting all frothy and silly. Have some Purina Kitten chow and settle down, try taking a little - wait for it! - cat nap. (Rim shot follows....)

Posted by cathar | June 26, 2008 12:27 PM

point taken cathar. Its overcast here in the Big Apple, and I have been distracted. I will cease my involvement with this thread

If I had Maggie in the wood,
I'd do her all the good I could.
If I had Maggie in the wood,
I'd keep her there till morning.

That's all I'm sayin'.

Jimmytown -- I'm actully amused at what your comments about me. Oh yes -- I am a catch for many reasons including the fact that I'm not an insensitive fool like you are. It's obvious from other posters that you are not exactly a favorite on this site (or at least in the particular post). [portion of comment deleted]. Oh, and my dogs don't wear sweaters but two of them (the bigger ones) enjoy wearing Yankee t-shirts (we're season ticket holders).

Back to the original topic of this thread, I'm so glad Maggie is home safe and sound.

Jimmytown-while I think that in an ideal world dogs would be able to roam free, it's *your* responsibility as the caretaker of a domesticated animal to ensure his/her safety in an environment that is not 'natural' (ie, there are thousands of cars and other vehicles about). It sure doesn't sound to me like you're doing that.

In any case, yay Maggie!

Posted by Kate | June 26, 2008 5:46 PM

The unfortunate thing is that Jimmytown is allowed to roam free.

Pub Mom-
Its your name dropping that bothers me. who are you trying to impress? BTW I go to London. We are season ticket holders. Tell me about your champagne taste, Im sure everyone is so fascinated as it pertains directly to the conversation. Did I tell you that I walked my dog today(Its a purebred that won best in show in 2007. We were on TV) Oh, and today I went down the shore (We have an Agusto 109 Helicopter with a pad in my backyard) If you can't see what you are doing, [section of comment deleted]
