Murder Suspect May Be Armed & Dangerous

Friday, June 27, 2008

Minutes ago, Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow released a statement about the murder of Montclair resident, Monica Paul, pictured at left. Dow says police continue to search for the father of the two children, identified as Kenneth Duckett, 37, of Orange who may be armed or otherwise dangerous. Kenneth Duckett is described as 37 years old, approximately 5’9" approximately 150 lbs. His eyes are brown and hair is black.

The vehicle associated with Duckett, a white Jeep, has been recovered in Orange. No arrests have been made. Police believe the motive was a domestic dispute and that Duckett had violated a final restraining order issued in October of 2007. The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has any information, they can contact the Essex County Homicide Squad at (973) 621-4586 or the Montclair Police Department at (973) 744-1234.

Well, since the last time he was seen he had a gun in his hand and had just fired three bullets into the head of his significant other, yeah -- I'd say he "may" be armed and dangerous. Geez.

Just a suggestion, but wouldn't it be more useful to have his picture next to the headline? Putting her picture there makes her look (at a glance) like the suspect police are looking for.

(Anyone paying attention here will have no confusion.)

The baristas are doing a GREAT job here.

I'd rather never see the creep again (unless he's dead or cuffed.... I'f prefer the former.....)

Somebody here had posted about seeing this guy harassing her on the street on wednesday and called the cops...

if that's true, wouldn't (shouldn't) he have been arrested for violating that restraining order?

Posted by brendan | June 27, 2008 5:41 PM

he should have, but restraining orders seem to be rather useless against some individuals.

Restraining orders useless. Got it.

Laws against handguns.....

But those work?

The picture above is the woman who walked by my car when the man in the car was harassing her on Walnut Street.
I feel horrible, but did all I could do.

We all feel horrible, OccasionallyHere. It's all really beyond belief.

Posted by walleroo | June 27, 2008 9:27 PM

What an absolute shame. I'm sorry for all those involved, and I hope this guy is picked up quickly.

OccasionallyHere --

Try hard not to beat yourself up, as you did everything you could. There was no way for you to know things would end as they did, and nothing more you could have done regardless. The law is flawed; although under a restraining order, there's nothing anyone can do if, during the time between your call and the arrival of the police, the suspect vanishes. Take comfort in the knowledge that the vast majority of others would never have dialed 911 in the first place -- witness, for example, Kitty Genovese. Your call was your civic duty, and you performed it. It was not for you to do anything more.

OccasionallyHere --

I do encourage you to tell the Montclair Times and the police and ask what came of your call and their action.

The police, courts and judges need to know where their weak links are.
And so do we so we can put pressure.
I had a stalker who was brought to court for threats and the judge said aloud he was concerned with what would happen to HIM if this guy did something to someone in this town...not to me or the people in this town...
As ugly as that was, perception counts, so please share your perception...

Sadly it seems all a restraining order does is give police the name of the first person to question in the event something happens.

OccasionallyHere,

First, I would also like to thank you for intervening in a situation that many would have shrugged their shoulders at and walked away. You did all you could have by calling the police when you did. Who knows whether the police actually saw Duckett that day, or whether the victim told them that everything was okay, as unfortunately many domestic violence victims do in an effort not to escalate the tension in the relationship.

I have registered with Baristanet just to respond to your posts, since I feel that it is extremely important to do so. As an ex-NYC prosecutor of 10 years, several of which were spent in the Family Violence Unit, I must urge you to contact the Montclair PD and/or the Essex County Prosecutor's Office with your information about this stalking incident just 24 hours before this homicide. This information is vital to the investigation and possible eventual prosecution of Duckett. Stalking behavior so closely linked to this tragic homicide is vitally linked to the case. Please don't assume that the police know about the connection just because you called them. Unfortunately, due to limited resources and/or concentration on other matters more pressing, the police might never make this connection on their own. Not only would your information be vital to me as a domestic violence prosecutor if this were my case, but perhaps something you can tell them can help the police track down Duckett -- something like the make of the car he was driving, etc.

I applaud you for getting involved when many others might not have, and urge you to contact local law enforcement with this information now. Perhaps knowing that you can actually assist the case will help, in a small way, with the feeling of helplessness you must be struggling with now.

Thank you for being an involved and caring citizen of this community.

Occasionally Here...you have my admiration. You did the best you could, from one caring person to another.

To AMO and and Everyone Else,

I called the Montclair Police Dept on Friday morning to tell them that I was the person who called and reported the incident on Wednesday and they said they would get back to me. I gave them my cell number, and they have never called.
I do have information about the car and can explain fully what I saw and how Monica was trying to get away from him. I would gladly help in any way.
I just am not getting through to the police. I will try the homicide number above.
Thank you all for understanding how awful I feel.

Occasion: You shouold keep calling the Montclair PD and the Essex Co. prosecutor's office. Intentions on Barista are well and good. But the authorities are who you need to speak to. Not the internet, solely.

We can pray for Mr. Duckett too. I cannot imagine the torment he is going through. Violence - a quick act - that ripples thru a community, destroying a family and its dreams. RIP Monica. May God forgive him.

I have been obsessed with this story since it broke last Thursday. I was at the Y one hour before it happened with my son. Can anyone explain why there are no updates regarding this horrific crime? Is there anyone who has anything new to share with concerned people everywhere????

Posted by sugarchitown | July 1, 2008 10:48 PM

I suppose we're waiting for Mr Duckett to be apprehended, which is the only prayer I am uttering regardng this lowlife murderer.
