A 19,000-square-foot Nutley playground -- designed by kids and built by some 100 workers in 1992 -- is in danger of demolition. The Nutley Creative Children's Playground has attracted rats from nearby St. Paul's Brook, who like to gnaw at its wooden pilings.
A reader writes:
I live just across the border in Clifton and have been taking my son to this wonderful park, mostly during the week, for the last few years. He has practically grown up there. It is lovely, shady, and truly is a creative playground far superior to any other in the area. Here is... was, a playground in which delighted children were able to let their imaginations soar. Happy, laughing children rescuing princesses from the castle keep, exploring the high seas as Viking warriors, climbing the masts of tall ships and fighting off pirates... but now the sounds of happy children have been silenced because of what appear to be a small group of curmudgeons. Perhaps the sounds of crying children is preferable to them.
It is not fair! If the Nutley Creative Playground is not rescued, how will I ever tell my six year old son that his beloved wooden playground has been torn down? One of those tiny uber-safe and boring cookie cutter playgrounds would not even come close to replacing it. I always thought that Nutley was a class act, a town that cared about children and cared about it's parks. I am sorely disappointed. Why can't anything good and lovely be allowed to exist anymore? Is Nutley going to join the rest of it's neighboring towns in a dumpy down-spiral? Is nothing sacred? If the Nutley Creative Playground is actually broken, then fix it! Take care of it! Repair it, rebuild it, put up a sound wall if you have to, or create a designated parking area away from the local streets and make those streets permit parking only, or perhaps do both things, but please do something to rescue this park!My son just came into the room and saw the picture. He had been disappointed the last week when we had found it closed. We foolishly thought that they must be cleaning it up or doing some routine maintenance because, after all, it is such a well cared for park, and after all, it is Nutley. "Oh, the wooden playground!" he exclaimed with glee. I paused for a moment and then told him about why it was closed. That the neighbors of the park thought it was too noisy and wanted to take it down or maybe replace it with a smaller park. He looked upset for a moment then thoughtfully furrowed his brow and said, "Well if they are going to do that, we will just have to call the President!" If only it was that easy.
Thanks,
HELP!

It looks like a really fun park, I'm sorry I didn't know about it until now.
As far as the rats go...is there a way to lure a couple of stray cats? We could have a well fed ferel family.
And if it attracts drinking teens we could have a well fed patrol car.
The only problem I can't figure out is how to avoid splinters, but that doesn't even seem like a problem.
