we'd love to see more photos of the rain. if you have 'em, post 'em here:http://www.flickr.com/groups/baristanet/

From this picture, it looks like the dark clouds are closing in from all angles! I'm out of Baristaville for the weekend. The grass is so dry in South Jersey that it crunches when you walk on it.

Anyone know what these sirens are we hear before these almost daily thunderstorms are?

I mean I assume they are storm warnings, but where are they located?

It took me a day before I realized they come right before the rain does!

Is it possible for a non holga'd shot to be posted on this site? The pretension kills me.

Posted by Bee | June 22, 2008 5:13 PM

I thought this was Iowa or somewhere down the Mississippi!

It pays to live on the hill! Hahahahahahaha

Posted by Laura Loonie | June 22, 2008 5:15 PM

the sirens are from the glen ridge country club telling golfers to get off the course!

Posted by muttcutter | June 22, 2008 5:46 PM

Thanks muttcutter. That's some good info.

Posted by jimmyp | June 22, 2008 7:10 PM

Thanks muttcutter. Not only have I lived up the block from GRCC for 16 years, my parents belonged there for 25 years. I have always heard that siren and wondered about it...now I know!

Posted by gail | June 22, 2008 9:24 PM

gail..your folks belonged to the CC for 25 years, and not once did they tell you the sirens were from the club?
wow

Posted by wayne robbins | June 22, 2008 9:41 PM

i was in my late 20s before i knew that amos and andy were white guys...

Posted by Iceman | June 22, 2008 9:46 PM

Wayne - I didn't live near the club growing up. I've only lived nearby as an adult.

Posted by gail | June 22, 2008 10:18 PM

Amos and Andy were white guys ?

Barista: How come no write up on the 5K Lager Run at Fitzgerald's last night? It's right in your backyard.

They go off when lightening is within approx 5 miles. Did you ever notice that they don't go off when it's dark?

They did when the system was first installed!

These t-storms are wreaking havoc on kiddie baseball and softball.

Posted by walleroo | June 23, 2008 8:48 AM

I didn't know that the expression, "that smarts" was a commonly known phrase for injuring oneself, until 10th grade.

That smarts indeed

Posted by evilmonkey | June 23, 2008 9:18 AM

Alvin Childress (Amos) and Spencer Williams Jr. (Andy) were African American actors.

Seconded.

Everyone is right!

As they began on radio, Amos n' Andy were voiced by white actors.

On TV, however, they were played by Black actors.

How was the race MM? I was also looking for some coverage, or pix's...

(My snarky self wants to ask: did they advertise here?.....)

Posted by profwilliams | June 23, 2008 9:31 AM

What does holga'd mean?

Is that the sound the GRCC siren makes when lightning approaches?

Posted by evilmonkey | June 23, 2008 9:32 AM

The race was awesome. But Dan Murphy always puts on a class act. Almost 600 people came out. We didn't know what was going on with the weather, though. One minute it was sunny, the next it was raining with thunder and lightning, and then raining WITH the sun out! Crazy! By the time the race started, it was very hot and humid. Not optimal conditions, but fun.

Afterwards, we were treated to beer, sloppy joes, hotdogs, fried potatoes and watermelon. And more beer.

Top guy was Adam Wolf with a time of 17:05; top woman was Maria Packovitch at 18:46. All participants received tech singlets and all age group winners got nice engraved beer mugs.

As for moi, I took home a 3rd place age group award.

Mikeypal, before there was a TV show called "Amas 'n' Andy" back ub the 50's, there was also soemthing called RADIO, which had voices but no visuals! And on that radio show Amos, Andy, even the Kingfish, all were voiced by white folks. Score one for color-blind casting, eh, laserboy?

Posted by cathar | June 23, 2008 10:13 AM

Congratulations, Miss M., for just showing up--not an easy thing to do, at my advanced age if not yours--let alone winning an award.

Posted by walleroo | June 23, 2008 10:15 AM

"...at my advanced age if not yours..."

Uh...thanks (I think?).

"Is it possible for a non holga'd shot to be posted on this site? The pretension kills me."

Pretension on whose part; the Barista's or the Poster's?

Posted by Finial N. Scroll | June 23, 2008 10:34 AM

What I meant, Dear Lady, is that I would not presume that you had accumulated nearly as many years as I. Perhaps for a spring chicken like you showing up is the easiest part. For me, getting down the stairs or balancing my peas on a knife are daunting tasks enough without running a race.

Posted by walleroo | June 23, 2008 10:37 AM

hi there. i generally do most of the posts on sunday. i should have covered the race but just didn't realize it was still on after all the rain. i was wrong - i should have called to check, and i apologize, since everyone would have enjoyed reading about it. but it is not too late: does anyone have any photos they want to send over to me to post? I PROMISE NOT TO HOLGA THEM!!!! any more coverage of the event from those who are there? just send it to tips@baristanet.com so we can share it with baristaville.

Posted by franliscio | June 23, 2008 10:43 AM

Congrats, MM!

Mr. Roo,

The obvious question remains: do you run on 2 legs or 4?

Posted by profwilliams | June 23, 2008 10:49 AM

Thanks Fran for the fair and honest answer.

Taking responsibility is sorely missed today.

(Sadly, I was almost expecting something a weak as the NY Times reasoning for revealing the name and details of a US terror interrogator...)

Posted by profwilliams | June 23, 2008 10:54 AM

You are forgiven, Miss Fran. If your really want to redeem yourself, you can do so at another race: the Sunset Classic 5 Miler at Foley Field in Bloomfield, on Thursday, June 26. Great race, great post-race party.

Posted by Miss Martta | June 23, 2008 10:59 AM

I don't run, period.

Posted by walleroo | June 23, 2008 11:04 AM

And if you're elected nonetheless, walleroo, I hope you also won't serve.

Posted by cathar | June 23, 2008 11:12 AM

Don't worry, cathar, my political career is in tatters. I didn't get one write in vote (not even from myself). The only thing I'll be serving is coffee at Starbucks (though I'm still waiting on the application I filled out the other week).

Posted by walleroo | June 23, 2008 11:20 AM

Mr. Roo,

You might not be able to run, but you sure can DANCE !

Posted by profwilliams | June 23, 2008 11:23 AM

"...my political career is in tatters."

You gotta stop chewing up the ballots! Restrain yourself, Roo!

Posted by Miss Martta | June 23, 2008 11:24 AM

If you are able to fill out the Starbucks Barista application you are automatically disqualified for being overqualified.

"You want fries with that?"

great idea! thanks for the heads up. what time should i be there?
and thanks for the kind words, profwilliams.

The race begins at 7 but people arrive there around 6. Awards ceremony is 8:30, give or take.

Posted by Miss Martta | June 23, 2008 4:13 PM

PS: Those are PM times!

Posted by Miss Martta | June 23, 2008 4:25 PM

Fran- you should be on Sunset for the Race- it's a large hill and the pack coming up it is impressive.

Used to be great when the one armed guy would come running up the hill leading the pack!
