Shockey's particular form of hell, prof, is greatly self-induced. He did not, as they say in the armed forces, want to totally "get with the program" even when he was healthy. (He also just might not really be as good, anyway as crucial to the team, as some sportscasters made him out to be in their everlasting crusade to puff themselves up at the expense of the Giants. That he wished to do less blocking certainly indicates he doesn't quite get the concept of a tight end as pioneered by previous position worthies like Mike Ditka.)
And Tiki just made a major miscalculation by leaving a tad too early, and to waste his probably considerable broadcasting appeal on, so far, fluff.
Tiki's leaving gave the Giants the roadmap for the future, and if he was there, I am sure they would have lost, probably in the wildcard.
But isn't this about Michael? Good for him. Out on top is a good way to go and now he will be remembered for a true blue champion... Congrats to him! We will miss him.
I also admire him for not announcing his retirement amidst the super bowl victory celebration, which would have detracted from the team's success. He gave it a few months, perhaps to contemplate but perhaps to let the team and the fans enjoy what was, an improbably run to a championship.
He's probably wise to quit now. Next season would likely be an anticlimax for him, being old and having to battle it out week after week in the trenches. I'm going to miss watching him on the field, though. What a terrific athlete. What a terrific season, that last one.
Great. Maybe he can give some of his retirement package to help complete the financing of the new athletic complex/field house. Then name it after him; at least it would be a name we recognize!
Congratulations Michael. You are a class act and you did it on your terms. We'll be looking forward to seeing your induction into the Hall of Fame.
So rather than keep playing till he can't, he leaves on top.
Very good.
Poor Tiki....
Poor Shockey....
