Talkin' 'Bout A Heatwave

Friday, June 6, 2008

weather%20half.jpg

The heat is on...Get ready for a humdinger of a heat wave that's hitting New Jersey beginning tomorrow and continuing through Wednesday. The mercury will soar and hover into the 90's, while beach-goers will get shock therapy dipping into the 60 degree ocean. Staying close to home? Local pools are the place to be, and you might want to install those AC window units today.

Every time I hear the words heat wave, I think about this. Tell us how you intend to beat the heat...and when in doubt, there's always Conan's Mojitos...

I'm nuts. Most likely, I will do a 5K race on Sunday, although I am undecided: Porugal Run in Newark or Run for Marge, a fundraiser for ALS, in Pequonnack.

BTW, if you are not a runner but just want to have an amazing time, check out the Portuguese Festival in Newark on Saturday. I try to go every year. It's like one big block party with music, people dancing in the street lots of amazing food, bazaars selling all kinds of cool stuff.

Porugal=Portugal, natch!

MM,

Have you ever bought a "cup" of sangria at the festival? I think they must use plastic wonton soup containers!

Really! No shortage of adult beverages and some interesting food choices there. Ever see the South American corn with the HUGE kernels? I always wanted to try it but I have to say I was disappointed. Didn't really taste like corn, more like the taste and texture of lima beans. But the kabobs are to die for.

Heat Wave is a great song. Another top ten hot weather song: this

Never tried the corn, but if the taste/texture are as described, I'll pass this year, too. (Not even after a quart of sangria and the resulting fuzzy tastebuds.)

Must agree on the kabobs, DEE-lish. Is it Saturday yet??

Drat - the mint patch in my garden has yet to grow in. Need to buy some for the mojitos.

When and where will Conan's Mojito fest take place?

Party at Conan's! Whoo hoo!

Martta,
We're busy Saturday and were thinking of going into Newark on Sunday. Do you know if anything will still be going on?

Posted by Grover | June 6, 2008 1:18 PM

According to the article in the Ledger:

The 29th annual street festival takes place tomorrow and Sunday along 17 city blocks on Ferry Street, albeit in a scaled-down version, he said.

Ferry Street will close to traffic at noon and becomes "Portugal Avenue" at 2 p.m. with vendors, music and dance. Folklore groups and marching bands will parade down Ferry at 8 p.m. and perform along the sound stages set up throughout. The festival ends at midnight.

The highlight takes place Sunday at 3 p.m. at the grand parade. The festivities end at 10 p.m.

Although....Newark, throngs of people, 90+ degree heat....I dunno.

Never mind, I found this:

The festival is fun; I used to go yearly when I lived in Newark. I don't know about this weekend. I hate hot weather and usually hibernate (unless it is work time) or go to Van Vleck where it is meditative and cooler.

And the groundhogs come out!

Thanks, Anne...yes, and if you are so inclined, the 5K race is Sunday morning at 9.

does anyone know the difference between 'kabobs' and 'kebabs'? I can't work it out...

Anybody who intends to do anything outside in the heat forecast for this weekend is nuts, doubly so for running! Then again, I think anybody who runs is nuts! But it should still be bearable at 9 in the morning I suppose. So Ms. M, I hope you have a good race and don't suffer the heat too much.

As for me, I'll probably be spending the entire weekend secreted away in condensation-cooled comfort. I hate the heat!!

Love the heat

Feel the heat

Be the heat

It's early enough in the morning and it's just a 5K so I should be all right. I'm not going to go my fastest, either, just have fun. Nothing beats smelling the smoke rising off cooking meat on a hot summer day in Newark with no shade. Mmmmm! :0)
