Underage Drinkers: Here's What Not To Do

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

This lesson brought to you from the Montclair police blotter of June 7, 2008.

  • Carry your vodka in a Poland Spring bottle.

  • Urinate on someone's front lawn.

  • When police confront you, run as fast as you can.
  • The 16-year-old in question, whose identity is protected because of age, was charged as a juvenile with obstruction, possession of alcohol underage and disorderly conduct before being released to his parents.

I'm not so sure I agree with that. Maybe he just didn't run fast enough. When I was underage, that was pretty much how it worked- hide your booze and run if the cops show up. This kid's mistake was probably spending too much time on the couch instead of getting some exercise.

I agree, if you cant outrun the cops at 16, you need to take a good hard look at your physical fitness. Unless the kid had way too much to drink, then its understandable.

I wonder if he will get more or less time than the 15 year old who was caught red-handed standing in a bank parking lot with his skateboard tucked under his arm.

He also had to zip himself up first.

    Released to his parents?

Those are the people who failed to teach him those lessons in the first place.

I would have released him to the people on whose lawn he urinated.

I don't know: drinking straight vodka at age 16, in the middle of Finals Week at school...some issues here..

Hopefully, the parents won't defend the actions of their "sweeet little boy."

if he was charged wasn't he bailed out rather than released?

He/she - I'm betting it was a he. The public urination is a dead giveaway. - woke up the next morning, probably Sunday, June 8th with a vicious hangover and an overwhelming sensation of dread and remorse.

Will he drink again? Definately. Will he get caught by the cops again. Probably not until he's had his first DUI or worse.

    And so it goes..

it is a sad commentary on the physical fitness of our youth if they can't outrun a suburban cop weighed down with a gun, bullets and heavy shoes.

... and the water is in the Vodka bottle!

Tell the kid to wait three years, then it will be called "college."

Most of the cops I see around Barsistaville look to be in good physical condition. I'm sure they most of them could apprehend an inebriated teen with little difficulty.

We used to get 'chased' up at Monk's Castle(Kip's) back in the day. It was a popular drinking spot and the cops would come to clear away the riff-raff. The best way to elude them was to run into the woods then sneak back over to Bloomfield Ave and saunter home - A long walk, but better than a ride in the 'backseat'.

I still carry vodka in poland spring bottle. until the parks and movie theaters accept that I am a responsible public drinker, it has to be done. And really, this kid should be locked up. Couldnt outrun a cop???? You hop one fence and the police will stop chasing a kid (you know how many things on a cops belt that can get stuck on a fence??? The kid isnt driving, and he needed to pee. Thats what bushes are FOR! C'mon, its freakin summer and these are the last few days these kids can get wasted and talk about it in class the next day!

Isn't that the long way to say "caught trespassing despite prior warning."

BOE, I don't think you can hold a juvenile on bail.

    appletony,

Not really since he had friends with him who weren't taken away by the police. They too were standing on bank property with their sports toys in their hands.

The only difference was that one had a bike and the other had a razor skooter.

Only the skateboarder was arrested by the Police.

I call it harrassment and discrimination.

You're saying not to run from the cops? Running from the cops is usually the best idea, unless that cop is fit and fast. Run kids, RUN!

    Jimmytown,
I highly doubt you are a responsible public drinker. Based on your post i would guess that you have a substance abuse problem. As far as the 16yr old getting caught...Stuff happens, I'm sure he learned a valuable lesson and also had some good stories for his more fortunate buddies who didn't get caught

I can just imagine the headline in the Montclair Times on Thursday: URINE TROUBLE

best thing to do is run from the cops.
drink inside and RUN kids, RUN.

    hahah so true!

I understand that the kids with him hadn't previously been told not to trespass & skateboard at that location. Maybe that's the difference?

I'm still trying to figure out why, if this incident is on the police blotter for June 7, it only appears here on June 17.

Lighten up. I am sure he was just holding it for a friend.

All of these posters who find this so amusing are the first who find it so outrageous that prom limos are filled with booze and are also calling for canceling proms in the future. Also the first condemning out of control teens at house parties and the priviledged boozing jocks. Well which is it going to be.. humor or outrage? We as parents cannot condone underage drinking simply because they're going to do it anyway.
My kid went to a friend's home where a parent said it was okay for them to have a glass of wine as long as it was at home and they were present! What?!?!?!? No it is not okay, when you are of age and your brain has fully developed then you can make the educated decision..until then absoltely not.

"My kid went to a friend's home where a parent said it was okay for them to have a glass of wine as long as it was at home and they were present!"

I agree with you. That parent had no right to speak for you or your kid.

I suppose running was safer than reaching for a cell phone, or wallet.

    Posted by jimmyp | June 17, 2008 5:24 PM

    Correct etiquette:
    1. Drink vodka, thereby emptying poland springs bottle
    2. Pee in said bottle
    3. Politely offer warm iced tea to confrontational constable.
