Brookdale - Branch Brook Confusion

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

Don't show up for fireworks tonight at Brookdale Park, or you'll be disappointed. A sign at the entrance to the park advertises FIREWORKS twice in big lettering, but the information about dates and times is too small for drive-by reading.

There is a fireworks show, with accompaniment by the NJ Symphony Orchestra, tonight (Tuesday, July 1) at 7:30, but it's in Branch Brook Park. The Brookdale concert/fireworks combo is this Thursday, July 3, at 7:30 pm.

For the full schedule of the Essex County Parks Concerts, including an evening with Dionne Warwick at Brookdale Park on Friday, July 11, click here.

Can't we have a bonfire instead? Now that would be fun.

And don't forget, the fireworks that are NOT happening tonight at Brookdale are sponsored by PSE&G!

Does anyone know how long the concert is?

I believe it includes the entire Wagner Ring Cycle, so you better bring at least a couple of bottles of your favorite beverages.

So, has anyone read the "new" rules for the Montclair parade this year? I can't wait. I have never been to a quiet parade before!!

"I have never been to a quiet parade before!!

The Gay Rights / Diversity Celebration / St. Patrick's Day Parade in South Boston is usually pretty quiet... :)

There's nothing about "new" rules on the parade website. What are the new rules and where did you read about them, montclairgirl?

Posted by banana split | July 1, 2008 12:22 PM

They are given to all who sign up to participate in the parade. I wish I had them in front of me but I read them, laughed and tossed them in the garbage can outside of 205.

What they really need to do is ban silly string on the parade route. There is nothing good about that stuff.

Posted by banana split | July 1, 2008 1:33 PM

Ahem, there's a REALLY good use for Silly String but it's not for parading. It's for detecting trip wires for bombs in Iraq.

Great idea. Someone should tell Ms. Shriver to come buy these vendors out of their silly string.

Really though, it makes me cringe when I see kids spraying the stuff on the vintage cars when they pass. Where are their parents? As a kid, I would have had my a$$ kicked into next week if I pulled that crap.

I never in my life knew that candy was to be thrown at parade spectators until I moved to Montclair. Crazy tradition, although my kids love it and think that is the purpose of a parade. It will all end one day when some kid gets run over by a vintage car or worse yet, a fire engine. It is an accident waiting to happen.

Oh mom!!! Here we go...let's add it to the list of "don't do this and don't do that..
Any good mom would know that even if the street is closed for a parade, you can't let your kid run in the street to retrieve candy with out you being one inch from it's little body! We usually have about 15 kids in our group and we haven't lost one yet! and don't plan on it, either.
So, no bull horns, no car horns, no sirens, um, can't remember them all but let me tell you, whomever is righting the rules must have just entered menopause!!

"It will all end one day when some kid gets run over by a vintage car or worse yet, a fire engine."

...especially if it's a kid with silly string.

What about those little gun powder popper thingies. You toss one my way - you'll lose a finger.
