Burglars Take Advantage Of Open Door Policy

Monday, July 21, 2008

Three homes were easy pickings for burglars last week in Montclair. Two homes in 200 block of Midland Avenue and one on Parkway near Edgemont Park were burglarized; all homes had a back door left unlocked, creating a favorable environment for what Capt. Manny Ayers of the Montclair Police Dept. calls "crimes of opportunity."

The burglaries took place between 1:30 and 4:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. In some cases, the homeowners' dog barked, but the homeowners didn't pay attention at the time. Computers and cameras were snatched.

The moral of the story: We're not in Kansas, people. Lock your doors!

"Capt. Ayers also suggested the homeowners remove the 'please rob me' signs from their front doors.

Aside from the craziness of leaving your door unlocked, I find it amazing that every night there is a group of thugs going door to door until they find an easy target.

If your going to lock your doors, the least you can do is leave a key under the mat

I was in a house that, with a bunch of H.S. kids and a mom home, was hit by a sneak theif in the afternoon (got away with mom's purse). 3 other houses were also hit. Time of day doesn't matter, lock them doors.

The crime rate in Kansas is about 12% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 89.8% of the crime rate in Kansas which is 13% higher than the national rate. The remaining 11.6% are violent crimes and are about 3% higher than other states.

Not that I'm trying to compare this place to Kansas, but I can't help but be amused that on my bookshelf I have two books sitting on the same row. This one takes place in Kansas. While this one takes place in Montclair.

For those who were burglarized and left unharmed consider yourself lucky. 20 years ago my grandparents were victims of a home invasion. They were tied up and held at gunpoint while their home was burglarized.

Now I know what to do with all the "bulk waste" that won't get picked up until the fall. Just put it on the front porch and leave the door unlocked.

Dear goodnightgracie,
Don't be such a stickler; I love references to The Wizard of Oz!

Your driveway does not protect your car from being entered. Close the windows and lock it!!!!

I love how people act like a homeowner leaving his back door unlocked somehow makes it less of a crime for a creep to come, enter the house illegally, and steal things.
