Commuters: Check Here First

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Want to know if the train you're heading out for is running 20 minutes behind? Need info on how to get to work after a big storm? Whether to take the train or the bus?

Baristanet and Clever Commute have teamed up to provide real-time transit alerts through RSS feed on our website. Just check out the tab section that appears under our lead story. Technical help was provided by MWW Group in East Rutherford.

Clever Commute is one of the best examples there is of crowdsourcing, otherwise known as harnessing the wisdom of the crowd.

Here's how it looks if you've never noticed it before:

Nice plug for CleverCommute - I take NJT to Jersey City every day and I swear by it.

I left Clever Commute some time ago. Sitting in a hotel room in Phoenix, I really didn't need to know that the 6:03 was running 3 minutes late, or that there was a cop sitting at Walnut Street giving tickets. And sitting at my desk in NYC I really don't need to know how any train is running other than the one I plan to take home. Way too much noise.

Well, mets2008, you can now find out everything you want, when you want, by looking at Baristanet.

This is a great new feature of both Baristanet and Clever Commute. Congrats to everybody!

Can't say enough good things about Clever Commute. Sure there's noise in the system from time to time, but it's nothing compared to the benefit you get from the timely and accurate information.

This is great. I love the train list for clever commute (the noise doesn't bother me, I just filter my e-mails into a folder). And on the few occasions I take the bus, I can have that info now too. Thanks!

I think this is going to be a great feature, thanks for adding it. However, the bus version doesn't seem to have updated since July 10th.

Thanks for the kudos...and thanks to all who helped make this work. Yes...that is Debbie and Baristanet team as well the good folks at MWW. And it's also you - the folks that provide the content.
I never thought this service would grow like it has...but it's been an absolute hoot.

I really like the feedback above. Just so you know, we're working on ways to allow you to temporarily suspend your alerts if you travel. Funnily enough, many people tell me they like the feeling they get when they are sitting on a beach somewhere and see the dreaded Disabled train in tunnel message ;).
In all seriousness...there are many different types of users out there...each with his/her own tolerances for what is "too much" mail. (Indeed, using e-mail filters/rules is a smart way to go).

My in-box is always open to your comments. Thanks again.

MISTALUKE - Thanks for the note.
All is working well.
It's important to remember that the Clever community assumes "No news = Good news". While I hope that means there have been no DeCamp issues lately ;)...I can tell you that none of our fellow commuters shared any transit alerts since Thursday evening.

Josh,

Thanks for all your hard work making clever commute such a success. And count me in as one of those people who gets a weird thrill out of watching a commuting debacle unfold in real time on my blackberry as I'm sitting on the beach without a care in the world...which will be in exactly one month from today.
