Duckett Arrest Details Disclosed

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

At a press conference held today at the Veterans County Courthouse in Newark, authorities disclosed that Kenneth Duckett was found hiding out in an hot, un-air-conditioned apartment, wearing a Yankees hat. He was arrested without an incident. Duckett's links to Brooklyn involve both family and his past criminal history. Duckett was booked in a police precinct in the Bronx. It is not yet known whether he will attempt to fight extradition to New Jersey. Montclair Police Chief Sabagh said " This was a horrible act. We don't have many homicides in Montclair." Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow described the crime as a horrific act that literally shook the whole foundations of a calm, nice neighborhood." Bail was set at a million dollars; authorities are still pursuing leads regarding an accomplice.

I am absolutelty shocked that bail was set at all.

He already ran once and if he were to make bail, what makes people think he won't run again?

He should be put in the general population of Essex County Prison until his court date and let him fare with the rest of the cockroaches in lockup.

THEY SET BAIL?!?!?!?!

[sound of head hitting wall repeatedly]

Something tells me he doesn't have $1 million.

Setting $1 mm bail doesn't necessarily mean he needs to come up with that much.

If a family member were willing to put up some collateral for him and pay a premium to a bail bondsman, he could be back out quickly. Stranger things have happened.

He wouldn't need the whole million. A bail bondsman would do it for (I think) about 20%. It's possible that he has friends who might try to help him make bail. I agree that setting bail at all, given the eyewittnesses and the circumstances, is a weird call.

He's friends and family couldn't get him air conditioning - can they get him 10 or 20 % of a million?

And what bounty hunter would take this case?

And who said that we were all fools for believing everything we read?!?! Here I was believing that guy's post saying he commited suicide & the police found his body behind the library. I am such a fool! ~snicker~

The Montclair Times is snoozing. Nothing on its website yet about Duckett being arrested.

Bail only is a guarantee that he will show up in Court again, not punishment for the crime.

However, since he's been on the lamb for several weeks, he's a flight risk.

So then, why bail?

Or set it at an impossibly high level...

But what's up with Sabagh comment "We don't have many homicides in Montclair"?

Posted by profwilliams | July 8, 2008 5:12 PM

"on the lamb for several weeks..."

Well, he should get off because he's hurting the poor lamb's back."

LOL...yeah Prof! Makes me think of Mayor Larry Vaughn saying:

"I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the beaches are open and people are having a wonderful time. Amity, as you know, means 'friendship'. "

Nothing yet on the Montclair Times website? Hardly surprised. It's the poorest excuse for a local paper that I have ever seen in my life. More like a flyer someone would hand out in an RV park. Considering how Montclair is teeming with real journalists, and the Star Ledger is such a fine paper, the people who run the Montclair Times should be shamed beyond belief. What a hack outfit from top to bottom. Perhaps the best columnist they have is the Montclairvoyant, or whatever he's called. Their "investigative" reporting is on par with a high school paper. The puff piece they wrote on the asbestos scandal at Renaissance was so bad I swore never to buy it again.

IF you set the bail to lets say 25mm then the defense will have something to bitch about, and turn the case (not likely) into their favor, or at least tie up the judicial system for a bit. setting it at 1mm is calculated, because that puts the burden on the lawyer or bail bondsman, non of whom would take that risk for someone who was on the run in the first place. I do agree, that no bail should have been set, but maybe for some reason you have to these days. For Sabagh to say there arent many murders, he is comparing montclair to the days before BAy st station, when Pine street and New st were for gangs

It's interesting that so many suddenly express a degree of bloodlust re Duckett. Not that it isn't understandable, it's just a mite unseemly.

This reminds of those who claim time and again that they could indeed "pull the switch" or something similar were a loved one of their own murdered. of course they couldn't by and large (they probably wouldn't even dare attend the execution, for that matter), but it makes them feel good to say they could.

It's far better, perhaps, to merely rejoice quietly that an apparent murderer has been apprehended. QUIETLY. So that even generally wildly liberal Baristaville isn't somehow confused with the bloodthirsty crowds which gathered at Newgate during the 18th century.

Well, this is the best news of the day.

It'll be interesting to see what's up with the guy who drove the white Bronco Jeep.

Hey dude, where's my HTML?

Posted by crank | July 8, 2008 7:03 PM

Well if they throw his head up on a pike, I'll go cheer them on Newgate or not.

Somehow I knew we had a Yankee fan on our hands with this one.

Good news ! get him back to the Garden State where he belongs. The brothers in prison are waiting for this punk.

Remember that bail and its conditions are charge- and fact-specific. The specifics of the bail should be available at some point.

In any event, this is fantastic news. Excellent work by law enforcement. God bless the little ones.

Interesting for Sabagh to say there's not a lot of murders in Montclair considering at the same time last year a father murdered his 2 daughters and then hung himself...
