If you liked the Soda Pop Shop, the 50′s-themed ice cream joint that closed a year and a half ago, you might want to come out to Church Street this Sunday (July 20) at 4 pm to see the former owner, Bobby Restaino — stage name Bobby Cole — give a free concert as part of Montclair Center Stage. In keeping with his retro theme, Cole calls his band The Spindles. And he has cut a pop CD called “Between Two Worlds,” which pictures him sitting on an old-fashioned TV set.
He started the Soda Pop Shop in 1999, after being injured on the job as a fireman. If you’re new to town, and missed it, the Soda Pop Shop was a little time machine of a place, decorated in a bubble-gum color scheme and filled with vintage board games and other memorabilia. It was a favorite “after the show” or “after the game” destination for many kids. Cole gave it up out of sheer exhaustion. “A business like that will suck the life out of you,” he said. “It wasn’t fun anymore.”
What is fun: going back to a life-long love of music. The CD is available at Midland music and will be on sale during Sunday’s concert. There’s also a Soda Pop Shop Memories Contest for those who spent some happy hours (and calories) there.

Will he perform at the Walnut Station farmers market, too?
that is some extra-cheesy cover art.
I miss the Soda Pop Shop. Few stores had the character it had. I give the guy credit. He’s doing what he wants to do on his own terms.
