Staten Island To Boycott Belmar

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Sure, we know a sense of humor can get you in trouble. Now Belmar's mayor has found out, too. A newsletter sent by the mayor poked fun at Staten Island girls, guidos and other renters who flock to Belmar for the summer.

Staten Island is not amused. We just received this media alert...

Staten Island Organization calls for Boycott of Belmar New Jersey if Mayor fails to visit Staten Island

Staten Island, New York- John "JE" Englebert President of the Staten Island Good Neighborhood Association is calling for a boycott of Belmar New Jersey by Staten Islanders. An apology is not good enough. The group wants the Mayor Kenneth Pringle who insulted Staten Island to spend 24 hours in the crown island jewel of New York. He would be treated to the local cuisine including a night at the Staten Island Hotel. The Staten Island Good Neighbor Association wants to take him on a tour of the place people love to dump on.

If he refuses the group plans a fundraiser to give for the candidate that runs against him in the next election and boycott ads will be placed in local newspapers across Staten Island. The groups website is http://www.statenislandgoodneighborhoodassociation.com

The mayor, who is known for patrolling the streets in an electric car, says the jokes were all tongue in cheek (as opposed to foot in mouth).

So Staten Island girls differ from Jersey girls, how?

MM,

If you have to ask......

But looking at a map, I'm still convinced Staten Island should be a part of NJ.

Therefore, like the tassel-eared squirrel of the Grand Canyon, SI girls and NJ girls are the same-- just separated by a million years of evolution.

And accent.

Hey - Staten Island girls are slugs compared to Jersery Girls. Have you ever heard Bruce or Tom waits sing about Staten Island girls?

I think Staten Island girls are considered bennys - or whatever they call us in the north. I got sick of being called names for spending my money on a trashy boardwalk so I guess I too have been boycotting.

Apparently urban dictionary has documented the differences.

Um, I think the mayor of Belmar was just keepin' it real. If your aren't a guido, you aren't affended. But if you wear weight lifting pants and a wife beater all the time, you know who the mayor is talking about.

Yeah it's the gross Staten Island accent that separates NJ girls from SI girls.

Staten Islanders aren't going to Belmar?

Note to self: Go to Belmar.

I once knew a girl from Staten Island. We met at the Jersey shore (not Belmar). She once told me all about a black potty that she had in Staten Island. The story did not make sense to me until I realized she was talking about a block party.

That the mayor of Belmar imagines there are gross differences between Jersey's own locals and Staten Islanders suggests the true extent of his delusion.

But I of course also support his right at any time to dump on guidos (including the one who posts here), who are never necessarily solely of Italian-American descent but do represent a sort of festering subculture often found in NYC clubs at their most aggressive and totally out of it.

If you read the post, He talks about a group of Blondes that shared a house for the summer and didnt know how to take out the garbage. His style of writing is pretty entertaining for a politician. Its so hard to get away from Guidos in the summer. Even Spring Lake is turning into a place to rest your gel spikes

"After hearing that, Mike Cortez, 18, of Staten Island said Pringle should lighten up.

'Guidos are just guys who like to party and get with girls,' he said. "If someone calls me that, it's just because they are jealous about us.' "

Ladies and Gentlemen, Exhibit A.

My wife grew up in Bayonne and she and her 'guido' and 'guidette' friends always went to Belmar. She was proud of being a Bayonne Barbie

Ask Mrs. Ice if she knows the Drogin family.

Ice, the reason many posters won't get either this item or your post is because they don't come in the first places from towns like Bayonne (plus North Bergen, Lodi, Garfield, Haledon, East Rutherford, Wallington, Roselle, Lyndhurst, Elmwood Park......)

Bayone is even kind of hard to get to. You only pass through it on your way TO SI, after all.

'Black Potty' sounds more like a Boston accent.

It's especially hard to get to if you're looking for Bayone..It's Bayonne..two n's.

The young woman who was interviewed on one of the NY TV stations last evening was what was called in my day a BGC: Brooklyn Gum Chewer. I think she was from SI, but without even trying she represented a virtual tableau of stereotyped characteristcs, from the hair, the makeup, the indignity, to the accent. They couldn't have cast it better if they tried.

I thought Bayonne was an island that thought itself a moated castle. Raise the drawbridge, Belvedere, the peasants are revolting!

I wish they all could be Staten Island girls.

I can bench press 2000 lbs and can lift 3 Staten Island girls with my pinky.

Have any of you ever watched "True Life: I'm a Staten Island Girl"? It's great, not as great as some of the other True Life episodes though, but in the top 10:

If my memory serves me, Mr. Pringle's wife is Kathy Ellis - the former communications director for Governor Corzine and I believe she is currently the communications director for PSE&G.

Ah, I am mistaken, she was McGreevey's spokesperson.

Corzine, McGreevey...

Losers both!!

They only two kinds of girls... Cali girls and Jersey girls.

I am in no rush to flock to either of those locations thanks.

I'm from Boston. I say 'pahty"

I recently returned to New Jersey, after living on Cape Cod for two years. Just after each Labor Day weekend it is customary for many locals to line the overpasses over Route 6 (the only real egress), holding up signs insulting the departing tourists. Obnoxious people insulting other obnoxious people, in my opinion.

Khan,

I am somehow reminded of another ethnic group with a very high rate of wife abuse in the home. And would you even believe that among this group in their mother country wife abuse is an acceptable practice? Now I wonder who they might me???

oops! that was ..might be...I so hate typos!

Well, as someone who grew up on Staten Island I have to say that it's all too true. Alas I didn't quite fit in with most of the local population which back in the 70's and 80's sported even more hairspray (men and women) than this mayor could even imagine! In typical local speak, "same sh_t, different day."

jimmyp, my wife and I like to spend time on Cape Cod in early September (the best time) and have driven under the signholders on the overpasses many times. As a rule, most of the signs seem to be saying "goodbye - see you next year" - not very insulting. Of course, there are some exceptions.

typical massholes

Ha.

I grew up one town over from Belmar, and love Ken Pringle. He hates the bennys as much as all the rest of the locals.

One borough down, many to go...

And when the "bennies" all leave, I cannot wait to here the shore folks crying about how bad business is.

Kinda like when it rains every weekend in the Summer.

All we hear about is the poor businesses...

Dumb business plan to hate your customers.

There is the hilarious character in the film "Working Girl" who was amazed to find the little black eveningdress with the pricetag $1500......(she exclaims)...."and it ain't even letha!!!!!!"

There are some beautiful shingle style suburban residences and beautiful residencial neighorhoods in SI like Todt Hill.

Typical benny mentality: the vast majority of businesses have nothing to do with you. The minimum wage kids working at the tiny percentage of restaurants and bars and stores you patronize might have to get jobs two miles inland? Boo hoo.

Really, the shore economy has nothing to do with tourists?

All the renters-- not too many "minimum wage kids" rent out their properties...

And the business owners.

And the beach passes?

And the parking fees? (Strange how those meters appear only Memorial Day to Labor Day).

You cannot be suggesting that the Summer months mean nothing to the towns.

(But as I pay for my pass today at Bradley Beach, I'll make sure to say hi to the retired "minimum wage kids" who sell and check passes, own the little food stand and patrol the beaches.)

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

Benny Go Home....

Go home and stay home. We'll use the beaches ourselves again.

Beach fees, by the way, are legally restricted (by the state, circa the late 80's) to be spent only on the beaches. Back in the day, towns could use their beach revenue to fund whatever they wanted.

Ug, I don't pay to get on any beach and I don't "do" the Jersey shore. That's TTFW.

You hate us up here, then by all means go back "down the shore" then. Certainly there are plenty of business opportunities like selling crabs or hocking fruity drinks. No need to hang out in Baristaville and live among the enemy.

Don't let the GSP tolls hit you on your way out.

I like you just fine when you're up here.

Also, newsflash: the vast portion of the state that's south of the Discroll Bridge is not an isolated Caribbean island with a solely (or even mostly) tourism-based economy. Even within the small towns that have beachfronts, the vast majority of residents earn their livings working in completely unrelated industries. Feel free stay away forever. Please.

What's belmar getting these days for daily beach passes? Back in my heyday down there (late 80's) they were getting like $8(US). I remember some bottle bleach blonde with buge boobs got arrested for not having a beach badge. Do they still arrest people for that?

No, they arrest them for not having huge boobs and bleach blonde hair. Oh, and another revenue generator for the "shore" peeing in public. Classy.
