Warwick Wows

Saturday, July 12, 2008

The baseball fields of Brookdale Park were sardine-packed last night with fans of Dionne Warwick, who wowed the crowd with Bacharach-David classics like "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "Alfie" and "What the World Needs Now." Warwick is an East Orange native. She won the county's Althea Gibson Spirit Award earlier this year. There are five more Friday night concerts at Brookdale Park as part of the Essex County Summer Music series.

We had a GREAT time last night. She sounded awesome! Can't believe not many posts about this concert.

Brought my mother along and we both had a very nice evening. The weather was perfect for an outdoor concert.

A great concert. She looked great and sung great. She spoke candidly to the audience, inviing them to get up and dance. She seemed to breeze through her earliest and most popular hits. She seem's more comfortable with today's progressive sound's, or turning a couple of hits around with Brazilian influences. When she sang "What The World Needs Now" she had the whol audience in her embrace!

Great show indeed; Dionne is still amazing after 40+ years on the scene. I got there a bit late, missed the first 3 or 4 songs. Did she do "Walk on By", anyone???? The guy behind me was a bit disappointed at the end about her not doing "Deja Vu". Dionne's brother was pretty darn good too, some great brother-sister duets e.g. "Thats What Friends Are For". So who needs Elton?

oh yes, she sang walk on by. i had a good time, was with a girlfriend and my sis plus our picnic basket, it was such a lovely night. she is still great after all the years. that was her eldest son David Elliot - he was great. She was married to a W. Elliot. She is still amazing. I also learned she was from the Oranges as well as Whitney Houston.

Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother is also from the Oranges (they are relatives of Dionne Warwick.) Sarah Vaughn is from Newark and frequented all of her old friends' piano bars in our area until she passed.(she liked to play a piece and have a nightcap here after performing in NYC) She rests in Rosedale Cemetery in Montclair. Most of these talents blossomed in local church choirs. I usually feel absolutely enchanted by the choirs at church services and church concerts in the Oranges and Newark...Grammy Award material! Dionne Warwick is VERY popular in Italy. She does an annual Europeen tour they are highly publicized and always packed.

And if anyone has heard her aunt, Thelma Houston, you will know the depth of the talent that runs in that family.

I saw Ms. Warwick when I was 10 @ Stockton School in East Orange, I guess it was around 1962. She did a show for the school. I think she attended Stockton School and was 'giving back' to the community. It was pretty cool having her sing for us.

The former Lincoln School of East Orange is now called The Dionne Warwick Institute. Ms. Warwick apparently does a lot for the East Orange community and if I remember correctly this year (as well as year after year) she was present at the school to give out awards to the students.

Frankgg,

Wow, I went to Lincoln school for K and part of 1st grade. I didn't even know it still physically existed. It was on Central Ave. not too far from Grove(where we lived) as I recall.

MellonBrush ~ You might enjoy seeing this site if you don't know it already. East Orange is quite the model revitalized city and you'll recognize many historic places from your childhood! http://cityonthemove.us/

If my memory serves me right, isn't there also a Whitney Houston Elementary School in East Orange, near Watsessing Park?

Posted by complainerpuss | July 14, 2008 5:17 PM

I thought Sarah Vaughn was resting in Glendale Cemetary in Bloomfield.

Please excuse me...Sir Gadfly, you are correct, Sarah Vaughn rests at Glendale in Bloomfield.
