Better Than Supercuts, He Says

Monday, August 18, 2008

Mista Barista's latest Beijing adventure was having his hair cut in a foreign language. His barber was a volunteer security guard, stationed at an underpass at the Madian Bridge.
In the warren of underpasses at the Madian Bridge, where the Badaling Expressway crosses the Third Ring Road, I discovered a barber, red armband and all, plying his trade while he kept an eye out for suspicious characters. Bahom was finishing up with an elderly gentleman when I happened by, and after considering it briefly, I asked him, mainly through gestures, to do me.

I mean, I'm not exactly Percy Shelley; there's not much to ruin. Communication was limited; I can’t say "layer it, please" in Mandarin. But he did a nice job, especially considering that he's working with a folding chair and clippers powered by a battery in his bicycle basket. A better job than the one I got from a surly girl at Supercuts back home a couple of weeks ago.

"... stationed at an underpass at the Madian Bridge..."

In the US, we call 'em homeless.

And who would approach a homeless man with clippers, powered by a battery in his bicycle basket in the US?

In China? With a puka bead bracelet and Gap-blue shirt?

No problem!

Give me a Clooney ceasar sir!!

Ni Hao Mr. Barista!!!!

Tune in tomorrow when Mista Barista tries a Beijing pay toilet.

Just watch out for the guy that generously holds the door open on his way out. That happened to me in Port Authority (long enough ago that they still had pay lockers too).
I went into the stall, the door closed behind me ? the next thing I know the guy is pounding on the door demanding his dime or else.

I've seen curb side dentists, and a 'beauty parlor' that was so small (just a stall) that those that had permanent wavecurlers in their hair, sat outside during the timing period. I've also seen those old electric curlers, where you are attached to an electric thingy. That was quite a few years ago. The streetside barbers are popular. No overhead costs? "Shave and a haircut - 2 fen"??

What did your haircut cost Warren?

You do know that in Beijing the barber shops are often fronts for other interesting activity right?
