BloHo v. MoHo?

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Montclair has become one of the one of the primo culture centers of New Jersey, partly by attracting many of New York's most creative refugees. But higher house prices, rents and property taxes have helped reroute some of the hungrier of artists to Bloomfield. Right now, they seem centered around Bloomfield College and a downtown full of vacant storefronts.

To meet the needs of the town's growing landscape of artists, BloomfieldArts.org has been created to specifically promote the arts and raise awareness of the importance they play in the redevelopment of the town.

"The arts are a vital part of any creative economy in a town," says Gregory Allen, Managing Director of the Westminster Arts Center at Bloomfield College. "As the town undergoes redevelopment, we thought it important for the arts organizations to come together and emphasis all that Bloomfield has to offer."

The new website is currently hosting a virtual "Open House," inviting all Bloomfield artists to sign in and introduce themselves. Twenty arts organizations, including the NJ Tap Ensemble (pictured), are listed.

BloHo, MoHo, HoJo

Do HoJo's restaurants still exist? I know there is a HoJo on Rt. 3 but does it have the famous fried clams?

Posted by hrhppg | August 26, 2008 11:48 AM

I think almost all the HoJos are closed; not sure if the one on Route 3 is still there. I was very surprised to see one in Lake George, NY, when I was vacationing there recently.

HoJo is now NoNo

Great,
That's just what we need right here on American soil -
a bunch of artsy-farsy liberal nut-job pansies who probably have no morals in their bleeding hearts, no flag pins on their spandex tee-shirts and no ribbons on their Subaru Volvo whatevers.

JP - you forgot to mention the Birkenstocks, lattes, sushi and tree hugging. You're slipping...

Posted by jerseygurl | August 26, 2008 12:45 PM

To the last poster - what is that obviously biggoted comment supposed to even mean? The topic was a migration from Montclair to Bloomfield ... both clearly on American soil.

Posted by MonkeyFace | August 26, 2008 12:49 PM

MonkeyFace, that poster is jesting albeit not entirely successfully.

Posted by Spot The Looney | August 26, 2008 12:59 PM

Ah.

In ten years the price of homes within one mile of the Bloomfield Train station will double.

Posted by MellonBrush | August 26, 2008 2:22 PM

I hope.

Posted by MellonBrush | August 26, 2008 2:23 PM

If we had an illegal massage parlor, it could be BloJo in BloHo (or MoHo for that matter).

Posted by Mrs. Martta | August 26, 2008 2:29 PM

I hope that post was in jest. Toleration of all types of people- be they artists or long time Bloomfield residents- is key towards our towns development. Judgement must get thrown right out the window. We must all work together, and listen to each other's needs-while also trying to keep the costs down. It can be done.

It is exciting how much the arts are stressed here, compared to where I'm from. But, is Bloomfield really close enough to Houston to be calling it BloHo? What's up with that? North of Houston and South of Houston, I think that's all we need. While we're at it, can we stop adding "gate" to every scandal?

A BloJo in BloHo? Whoa, Joe!

Posted by Nellie | August 26, 2008 2:56 PM

There is no HoJo's restaurant in Clifton on Route 3, only a motel still using the chain name. The restaurant has been an IHOP for 20+ years. Don't you folks ever get out on the highways and notice things? Are you that much of a shut-in, hrhppg?

Hi Ho, Hi Ho,

To the highway I will go,

In search of HoJo, MoHo, Blo

Hi Ho, Hi Ho!

The woman in the picture looks like she was cut from the Wanderful photo mold. All she needs is the Chihuahua.

Posted by Nellie | August 26, 2008 3:19 PM

That IHOP must do pretty well. At times, I've seen a line of people out the door.

Posted by banana split | August 26, 2008 3:27 PM

I hear their banana pancakes are wanderful!

Posted by banana split | August 26, 2008 3:31 PM

How are their banana splits? LOL

Posted by Nellie | August 26, 2008 3:36 PM

Darn me for not knowing more about the fine dining off Rt.3 in Clifton. I must be a shut in as I have't ventured into the HoJo's and darn me for watching the road as I drive to the city.

Don't you have a few dozen liter boxes to be chaging cathy? You'd better hurry along, that is an odor you don't want to let linger.

Posted by hrhppg | August 26, 2008 3:41 PM

Any litter box used by felines, I'm absolutely positive, smells far sweeter than any room you've just lumbered through, hrhppg. Even when you're not in heat.

Posted by cathar | August 26, 2008 3:46 PM

I don't know, Nellie, I hit HoBlo (Holsteins in Bloomfield) for mine!

Posted by banana split | August 26, 2008 3:48 PM

"In ten years the price of homes within one mile of the Bloomfield Train station will double."

That would really be nice but more possible in 20 years at this rate.

There's a home on Monroe Pl (near Spruce St.) that's been on the market for months and still no sale! It's in the "historic" green section of town too and yet no takers?

Oh, I have no doubt cathy that a woman smelling of soap and water must be offensive to your senses. I wish we could find middle ground on this - but I don't care for the aroma of kitty liter, pork rinds and bike exhaust. I guess that?s why I know so little about highway dining.

Posted by hrhppg | August 26, 2008 4:03 PM

The HoJo's on rt.3 in Clifton is(was)home to the famous "PiP's lounge. There was a HoJo restaurant on rt.46 in what is probabally Totowa but that has been closed for many years. As an aside,Jaques Pepin, the famous french chef and confidant of Julia Child was instrumental in developing the original concept and menu for HoJo's,which was revolutionary for that time and a precursor to todays fast food. Not that is necessarily as good thing.

A-YO! We pronounce it Boom-field, thank you.

Posted by lasermike026 | August 26, 2008 6:53 PM

I'm sure you know so little about highway dining because your brief encounters have only ever begun along the highway, hrhppg. You know, an upraised thumb, a come-hither look, a raised haunch and then it's let the wallowing begin.

Y'all have a good, muddy time, nonetheless.

Posted by cathar | August 26, 2008 7:16 PM

No cathy, I'm not like all the women you've ever known. But I can imagine that is how you met that special woman in your life. She is a woman isn't she? I've heard some of those gutter girls are hiding a few 'surprises".

Your lame attempt was a nice try, but remember, I'm a nice girl from Baristaville, not a wanna-be hoping no one will notice as I peer over the fence.
