Summer's Last Laps

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

I just hate it when pool closings are announced...and the simultaneous appearance of potted mums for sale at the A&P. It's summer's death sentence, throwing me into seasonal mourning.

The local lifeguard exodus is responsible for the first of Montclair's pools to close. Essex Pool dries off at 8pm this Friday, August 22. "We hate having to do this," says Recreational and Cultural Affairs' Pat Brechka. "Essex was scheduled to be closed last week, but we were able to find staff to keep it open until Friday," says Brechka, "however we haven't found extra lifeguards to keep it open any longer." The choice of closing Essex Pool was based on its location and optimizing pool access for town residents Brechka says. Mountainside and Nishuane Pools' last splash is on Labor Day, September 1, 7:30 pm.

The Glen Ridge pool stays open through Labor Day, but beginning Sunday, August 24, will close earlier - at 7pm through the week.

Summer doesn't end until September 22, Labor Day and pool closings be damned! And even afterward, summer is a state of mind.

The worst of times is now...What's left of summer but a faded rose...

This time of year SUCKS

Why doesn't Montclair require a commitment from its lifeguards through Labor Day? Every other pool in the area -- public or swim club -- seems to find enough guards to get through the holiday? Its bad enough that the Montclair guards do almost nothing to clean up trash around the pools. On their breaks they lie around the pool office like its a flop house. Time to hire some kids who are motivated and managers who demand and expect more from their guards.

Jerzee,
I couldnt agree more. BTW, they cant work this weekend? Another sign of laziness.

Since we're speaking of pools, does anyone know anything about the pool on Grove street across from the cemetery?

Posted by noelle | August 20, 2008 3:09 PM

That's a private pool - membership required.

Pshaw! Now we are getting into the best part of the year. The days are still warm and sunny, like today, one of the most beautiful days of the year. Yet the nights are cool enough for sleeping with the windows open and the air conditioner turned off.

I love it!

Too bad the Montclair recreation department didn't contact us BEFORE they started closing pools to put out a call for available lifeguards. I happen to have a newly-minted life guard right in my household, looking for sub jobs until Labor Day.

Noelie...It's called the Montclair Beach Club. It use to be Montclair's public pool many many years ago. The Montclair Y Dolphins practice there all summer in the early morning. It's a big pool with cabanas, diving boards, snack bar, etc.

I currently live in Verona which has a fantastic township pool that includes six lanes open for lap swimming, closes late(until 10PM) on Wednesdays and Fridays in July and early August and has two water-park like slides. They're having an Adult Splash Party on Friday, September 5th. There's a $10 entrance fee which includes a variety of desserts, soda/tea/coffee and a live band! You're also allowed to bring your own adult beverages to the Splash Party.
