Keep An Eye Out For Dakota

Monday, August 25, 2008

She responds to "step up, wanna peanut, pretty girl and I love you." And if you hear laughing, whistling (cat calls) or microwave sounds -- it may be her. Dakota is missing from her Lincoln Street home in Glen Ridge since Saturday.

If you see this birdie with its bright red tail, call 973-727-6063.

The missing animal stories break my heart.

Tang Poohzie the original hopes that Dakota will fly back home soon or be found.

Tang would not devour Dakota; he would offer him/her a spot in his special big box with his orange quilt and ugly doll.

How did Dakota get out, anyway?

How sad. I'm sorry I cannot offer much advice- a lost bird is much different than a lost cat, I presume.

Sending good thoughts your way(please keep us posted!)

I wish I knew more info--yesterday I saw a large bright orange winged bird on the tops of my trees--that I could not identify--and last week I had a small parakeet with florescent green wings and a blue tail with a cute little yellow face in my yard for two days.

Im sorry that your bird is lost. if its at all comforting, at least it gets to spread its wings now and fly as a bird should. Im sure it will be missed, but think about the bird. did it really want to be in a cage for its entire life?

We're assuming the bird can fly? Many pet birds have had their wings clipped.

@Anna Nicole-

Didnt take that into consideration. If that's the case, it cant be too far then, right? or maybe they can still fly a few feet at a time.
One Second thought. This has been a caged animal for 5 years, it may be qualified to run for president!

Oh, how sad. I lost a noble macaw years back. Even though the wings were clipped she still managed to fly into the trees. I will keep an eye out for it. Good Luck. By the way, Jimmytown, your remark is very insensitive. Hope you never have to go through the pain of losing a pet and have someone make a joke of it.

Jimmytown, some bird owners do let their birds fly freely around the house, and, if they're home often, that means that the bird is out of the cage a great deal of the time. Birds are also very affectionate with their owners, so it's unfair to think that the bird felt "trapped" and wanted to get away. And most bird owners clip the wings, but if it's been a while since they were clipped, they can fly again, and pretty well too. If its wings were recently clipped, it would have gotten about a few feet high and had no choice but to come back down again (the choicelessness due to gravity). Anyhow, maybe it just wanted an adventure but took it a bit too far.

My friend's yellow nape Amazon flew away, but it didn't go far. He flew from tree to tree in a two block area, if even, and was just an inexperienced flier so he wasn't too sure of how to get down from such a height. Anyway, he was thrilled to be home when we got him back. He's not an irresponsible bird owner, he just thought the bird's wings were short enough for him to take the bird out for some fresh air, and then it just flew and flew.

Hopefully they get Dakota back. It would help to say what kind of bird it is--looks like an African grey (all grey, red tail).

april-
Just because you paid for it and call it yours... a pet is not something you can trap and own. Sure you love it, and since you clipped its wings (why???)
Say what you want. But if this bird is intellegent, it dit not lose its way. If you love something, set it free...if it comes back, then you can lock it in a cage

Jimmytown,
Did you ever own a parrot or macaw. These birds are as intelligent as a dog. They love their owners and are perfectly happy living as a pampered pet. (My bird was not in a cage, but on a perch). Also, most pet shop birds are hand bred and raised...not taken from the jungle. When they fly away, as mine did, it was because a loud noise startled them or some unforeseen circumstance. (That is why the wings are clipped). Being alone and hungry is not freedom to these birds...it is traumatic until someone can find it.

It also seemed cruel to me to clip birds' wings to keep them as pets. But maybe I don't know enough about it.

april-

if you keep a kid in a cage his whole life, he doesnt know the difference and becomes dependent on you. The fact that the bird is intelligent proves my point. Its sad to keep anything indoors because you selfishly made it dependant on you. Hand Bred? For profit.
