Treasures From Baristaville's Bins

Sunday, September 28, 2008

Saturday, I stopped by the recycling center with piles of old cardboard to unload. A couple was hauling a crate of magazines to the bin at the same time--and what magazines they were: stack after stack of Family Circle and Good Housekeeping--from 1976 to 1980. They were happy to let me take a few home, and I've been reading them all week. So far I've clipped a great oatmeal date cookie recipe, a workout chart, and best of all, an article on crocheting. I couldn't remember the best way to loop the thread over my left hand--and there it was, a perfect illustration and written instructions.

A few years ago, I snagged a great economics textbook from the recycling bin, and even an interesting catalog. Be super careful--don't ever reach IN to the bin. It's dangerous since they 'turn and squash' it every few minutes. But if something really enticing is right there on the edge, or not even in the bin yet--well, you know how we Baristavillians love to read. How about you--have you ever harvested a great book or magazine from the recycling bin, or picked up a free couch or television from the curb the day before bulky waste pickup?

freecycle is fantastic, i agree.

hey, does anybody want a case with thirty phish live bootleg cassette tapes?
seriously. my neighbor moved and was throwing them out. now i don't know what to do with them.

I can only wonder what sort of person might seriously enjoy 30 Phish cassettes. And, idly, what color his/her pull-over wool cap (a la' the "deaniacs") is.

I can also only wonder, Fran, what kind of neighbor you used to have there. And what color his/her own wool cap was.

An aphishianado, perhaps?

My DH and I always on the lookout for bulky waste days. We've gotten some great finds. We would love to know the bulky waste schedules for towns like Essex Fells and Short Hills. Someone needs to create sort of a masterplanner bulky waste calendar!

Wow! Wish I didn't have to work and could waste my day like this . . .

Fran,

I saw your post on Freecycle.

The mods put a note on it that says Phish allows taping and that the tapes aren't bootleg.

Someone will want them. Have you gotten any responses yet?

Yes, "aphishianado" is brilliant.

But boy oh boy were they a lousy band. Unfocused and more or less songless. Kind of a harmless way to spend at least 120 minutes a pop minutes nodding off vacantly into space, but otherwise there was very little there. When it turned out that their leader had a heroin problem, much of that made sense to me. I wonder how their hardcore fans took it, however. As Trey Anastasio's "right" after so many long, diddling performances for the formless among us?

Folks who didn't recognize Phish's musical talent simply didn't have either the patience or the intelligence to do so.

Four geeks with music degrees made some seriously innovative music during the 1990s. Not that everything they did succeeded, but it was different--and smart.

But go ahead and call it "lousy". It makes you look much cooler.

I'd be surprised if anyone wants those tapes, by the way. Few people listen to tapes anymore, and just about any bootleg is available online.

well, if no one expresses an interest, i'll just put them on the curb or something.
there was just something so....earnest about them. when he was getting ready to throw them out because they were moving the next day, i just said, no, wait, give them to me. maybe i can find a home for them.
BY THE WAY as long as i'm busy anthropomorphizing inanimate objects, did anybody else notice with alarm that the huge row of shrimp plants at kings just "disappeared" on saturday? what happened to them? i meant to buy one but kept waiting to see if they would sprout yellow or red...then, they were gone. i felt sad, like, "maybe they thought no one wanted to buy them and so they threw them out."

i know, i'll go check freecycle and see if there is a notice for anyone who wants to pick up 20 shrimp plants in green plastic pots from the parking lot of a grocery store.

"Few people listen to tapes.."

Yes and this really hit home when I offered my DH's almost 13 yo grandson an old (but perfectly fine) CD player and cassette tape deck). He looked at me as if I had three heads.

Myself, I have boxes of cassettes in the basement that are just waiting for a garage sale.
