This year marks the 10th anniversary of Conversations on Race (COR). More than 1,000 area residents have participated in the program, engaging in honest, thought provoking and sometimes uncomfortable conversations with neighbors, colleagues, friends and strangers about race and race realtions.
COR starts tomorrow night (Oct. 4) and promises to promote some interesting discussion, particularly in this historic election year. Here's how it works: For two hours a week, over a five-week session, participants, volunteers from the community, discuss their personal experiences in a safe and confidential setting, monitored by trained facilitators. For information, email Myrna Marcarian Mincey or call 973-509-4907.

"... honest, thought provoking and sometimes uncomfortable conversations with neighbors, colleagues, friends and strangers about race and race realtions."
Boy that sounds like a party.
Or a late night in a Freshman dorm.
The last time that I linked to my all time favorite conversation on race, walleroo called it stupid.
Huh? What? You talkin' to me?
Are you sure I didn't say "stoopit"?
Black people don't like white people. White people don't like black people. We try not to let it show.
What's to discuss?
All you need is a balloon marsupial to break the ice, and everyone will love every one.
I don't like white people either.
Is this one especially for lame, old, chubby white folks who can't sing? And if so, will the "vocalization diversity facilitator" be dannyboor?
If you want an autograph little richie, all you have to do is ask. :)
Only on a check to the Salvation Army, dannyboor.
Now I remember where I got that: Tom Lehrer!
Oh, the white folks hate the black folks
And the black folks hate the white folks
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule
Captain Beefheart said that "everyone is colored or else you wouldn't be able to see them."
All hail, Mr. Van Vliet.
walleroo,
how sad that you feel that way. you must be really angry...or afraid.
Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.
Bajanyankee, the good marsupial is just having fun. Kidding. Recalling a pretty durn good musical satirist named Tom Lehrer.
You sound much stressed out about matters racial yourself, however. And prone to taking these things way too seriously. For your penance, I suggest watching "Black Caesar" and its marvelous sequel "Hell Up In Harlem" the next time they run on IFC, and reading dannyboor's healing posts from about 2 weeks ago here about lame white chubby old folks who can't sing.
Thanks for the advice Cathar. I must admit that I am sometimes stressed over racism. I still experience racism quite often (once is one time too many) and unfortunately, the taste doesn't always wash down easily. I know many comments are made "innocently" and there is always the danger of being too pc. Nevertheless, no one likes to be dismissed, disrespected, discriminated against or downright hated in a "matter of fact" way. So....I stress sometimes; especially for those not as fortunate as myself.

Ah yes, Tom Lehrer, comic genius.
"It's not against any religion, to want to dispose of a pigeon."
You might want to reread it richie. I didn't say anything about them being old. Get it right!
And yes, I have no problems calling my fellow white people out when they exhibit lame behavior just as I hope my wife would smack me upside the back of the head should I spontaneously break out in some dorky polka.
bajanyankee, while you're taking cathar's advice and scouring the archives for my post, you might want to check out the post about the insensitive dolt who chose to display the Confederate flag on their lawn, and cathar's subsequent rabid defense of it. He's a regular bleeding heart and definitely someone to lend an ear to when it comes to matters of race.
Hip, hip, hooray for Myrna! I know she's put a lot of hard work into the program and I'm sure it will be successful.
And to most of the posters here, if you don't have something nice (or just plain "decent") to say -- occupy your hands in some other way than spewing through your keyboards.
Thanks Dannyboo...It seems that things can get interesting here... Did anyone attend the program?
