We report lost and found dogs fairly frequently, but rarely stolen dogs. But Montclair Police are looking for the public's help finding Ruby, an American Staffordshire Terrier removed from PAWS animal shelter yesterday between 2 and 4 pm. If you have any information, call Det. Adam Toops, 973.509.4717.

Where's McGruff when you need him?
I'm a little confused; Isn't Paws' goal to find homes for seemingly unwanted animals? Admittedly, they did not get a chance to fully "vet" the prospective adoptive family, but they saved by not having to give away a free housebreaking Wee-Wee Pad.
it is disturbing. maybe this pet is going to a loving home and maybe not. what if some creeps on a "do not permit them to adopt" pet list stole the dog. Maybe she will be used for illegal and brutal dogfighting, such as Michael vick used to run. maybe for animal experiments.
i hope they find her safe and sound.
Staffordshires are pit bulls more or less, yes? Could the Baristas supply some further?details on this one? How, for instance, did folks abscond with a dog from what I assume is staffed facility?
I don't think anyone who steals a dog is the type of person to provide a good home for a dog. Poor thing, I actually went to PAWS a few weeks ago and Ruby was one of the dogs we looked at. She was very sweet, but as she is a pit bull and I'm a renter, I couldn't get her.
Staffies are adorable. However, shelters are very wary to whom they adopt them because they are a common breed used for dogfighting.
Hope they find her safe qnd sound and hope they beef up their security, too.
I have to agree with Cathar, how does a dog go missing from there? I went in about 3 weeks ago and fell for a boxer named lady. My landlord wanted close to 2k more in rent and we had to pass, but lady was well supervised with us.I can understand if one of the volunteers lost the dog while walking him/her in the field, but indoors???
Can the Baristas get to the bottom of this? How in the world can a dog be stolen from PAWS? Did one of the people there help with her disappearance? This is very worrisome, I feel so bad for Ruby, I hope she is ok. I've heard about dog fighting in our area, I hope to god she is not going to be used in this awful awful way.
I would really like more information as well. I feel so bad for her (considering what fate often befalls stolen dogs), especially since I "met" her the other week.
Scroll please tell me you are not that ignorant... PAWS can not just give animals to anyone who walks in. You would not believe the abuse and neglect that goes on a daily basis. Because of Ruby's breed, she is at risk to be used as fighting, or as bait for another fight.
I can not comment further on the details because this is on an going investigation, but I think the people who are judging have no idea what is takes to run a shelter and how hard it is to take care of all the animals. PAWS does a great job with the volume of animals and the number of staff members they have.
What a terrible thing... I have been warned by several people to keep a very close eye on my own pit bull because they're often stolen for fighting or bait. It's almost more than I can stomach thinking about.
Ruby is a beauty, and I hope she gets back safe and sound.
PAWS does an amazing job and provides a much needed service in Montclair with relatively few resources. I hope people are not implying otherwise with these comments.
This is very upsetting. I hope to God this poor dog isn't being used for figthing purposes. Please keep us updated. What a beautiful dog.
When a pit bull is stolen, it is a serious matter. I am hoping against hope that there is a logical explanation.
Very upsetting. We have a lovable pit bull also and the idea of a lovely dog like this being stolen for what are probably evil purposes breaks my heart. I hope they find her.
I remember even when I worked at the Humane Society in Newark 35 years ago, people were stealing pit bulls - I remember we reported in the Humane Society magazine about someone stealing them from the East Orange pound (which is no longer in existence).
I've been walking Ruby and spending time with her for the last month as a volunteer... and I was on the verge of adopting her myself. The picture doesn't tell the story... she was beautiful and a very smart, gentle, happy, playful dog -- in fact, she was the only dog in the shelter that wouldn't bark. She was even fully trained.
Please join me in trusting that she will very soon be returned happy and well.
