Say what you will about Newark, the newly created Greater Newark Convention and Visitor's Bureau is taking the city's image makeover seriously. Director Hector Ortiz says "you can have an attractive urban experience here - there's a lot more to Newark than most people think." Sure, we know what you're thinking, but c'mon, you know you're going to get down to NJPAC or the Pru Center for some world-class entertainment, take in a NJ Devils game, or pay a visit to one of the museums downtown. And while you're there, wouldn't you like to know about great places to grab a meal?
Go Newark Restaurant Week showcases a variety of Newark's international eats next week, November 3-13. Thirty-four premier restaurants in the city's downtown "entertainment district" are offering up to a 20% discount, and special prix-fixe menus. Check out the list of restaurants participating in this promotion, and donwload your savings pass here. If you've been longing to savor the Portuguese and Brazilian flavors of The Ironbound (aka tapas central), now's a good time. After all, even Zagat's finds Newark dining delicioso; they just published the city's own guide.
Many of the establishments are walking distance from Newark's Penn Station, but if you drive, parking is plentiful throughout the center.

Good sales pitch, but....Ahhhh, I think i'll take a pass. All of that except the museum is closer at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) as well as over 15 places to eat in a 5 minute (MAX) walking distance. Top names in entertainment, 5 movies and more. 12 minutes from BLMFD Center, loads of parking, too.
(and when you are ready to leave, your car will STILL be there!)
The BF works in Penn Station, so this may be something we'll take advantage of. I enjoy the Spanish Pavilion, although it's in Harrison, not Newark. I love NJ PAC; don't get there often enough but am going to see "Cats" with my BFF from college in November.
27 Mix has great food and great live music! It also has a great outdoor space.

Newark has awesome restaurants in the Ironbound.
Sagres (garlic shrimp!) and Mompou (tapas and wine) are both very good.
Sandy - are you suggesting that your car would likely be stolen in BLMFD Center as well? C'mon, bloomfield center may not be pretty but it's no jungle.
The Iceman loves Forno's. Try the garlic shrimp appetizer. Ingress and egress are easy and the parking is in the back of the restaurant. For those foodies who haven't experienced the tastes of the Ironbound section, you're in for a real treat.
My experiences with Spanish-Portuguese restaurants in Newark, however heretical it may sound, is that they're all pretty much the same. Oh, they differ a bit in the attention paid to individual dishes, but really, a blindfolded diner couldn't find you intrinsically genuine differences between the whole lot of them. (And there sure are a lot of them.)To maintain that there are great differences between all these places is merely restaurant reviewer gush.
All of them, too, have their off nights. But even their menus are all basically so similar. So while it's nice that Newark and Harrison have so many of these places, probably half of them in any imaginable order would really never be missed come a recession.
I've always thought that some enterprising soul should open a decent restaurant near the court house. I work in the area and there are few restaurants and those are pretty dismal. Hundreds of jurors pass through thoses doors each day, plus attorneys and court workers. And the typical suburban juror does not want to wander too far afield in Newark. Seems like you could take advantage of the captive audience and do a decent business. So anyone have some extra cash to invest in such an enterprise?
Spanish Tavern...mmm

Show me where I typed "Bloomfield"-or- Bloomfield Center?
The original posting concerned NEWARK.. Yes?
27 Mix (Halsey Street) is nice...there's also The Spot (Commerce Street)and Kilkennys (Central Ave). Also lots of Pourtugese and Spanish "faster" food and restaurants in the Iron Bound.
Oops. Missed the prior posts on Down Neck. Cather, I agree on your take of the restaurants in that area. The biggest difference seems to be the ambiance. Even then you can sometimes forget which rodizzio spot you're at that night. For the "braver" souls among us, there's also Hell?s Kitchen (somewhere around Bruen or McWhorter) that has a burlesque show on Thursday nights. Really interesting...
Beira-Mar of Spain breaks that "which-Portuguese-place-am-I-in-now" syndrome with so many of the Ironbound places, and it is only a couple of blocks north of Ferry Street. Very good food, and decent prices. The balmy summer night we were last there, there was a group of local guys hanging out in front of the barroom door, one with an accordion, singing songs for the pure fun of it.

from your mouth to God's ear, as they say. i did jury duty at that court house for nearly two weeks and there wasn't one single place nearby to get so much as a decent sandwich. anything--a panera, a starbucks, a good mom and pop coffee shop with a working grill and clean silverware, would have been great. that was a few years ago, i can see it hasn't improved much since then.
Can I ask exactly what kind of "burly-q" show? Towards the end of my h.s. days, there was still a burlesque house in Union City, and the opening act to Lili St. Cyr (we'd slavered over her brief appearance in "The Naked and The Dead, to see her in person was a gift direct from God) did things with a crucifix I'd honestly never imagined ever Sister Pierre doing. So can I find something similar in Newark today?
Bregman's Deli is (I think) 1/2 block away from Court House. MMmm Good!!
I checked, (with wife) it's on Branford Pl. All the Judges & lawyers go there. Excellent !!
Bregman's Deli
Maize is actually very good. Churrascaria's in the Ironbound are okay if you're looking for an inexpensive family outing and meatfest.
Sandy:
I think you referring to Hobby's Delicatessen on Branford (great sandwiches), or is Bregman's a different deli on that street?
Also, don't forget about TM Ward's coffee -- a longtime Newark wholesaler on Broad St. It has an excellent storefront which is very close to the courthouse.
I enjoy Mompou Tapas Bar & Lounge. Good food and good wine. I went there for one of their wine tastings over the summer. They featured the wines of Argentina and everything was lovely.
At Kilkenny now! Helicopters flying by. Something is going on! Hopefully just a follow up on the story line of the week...
Cather, it's women in skimpy clothing swallowing swords...with a few jokes and audience participation. I'll admit it was eye popping for me...but I'd never seen anything like that before.
BTW, I saw a sign this morning advertising Montclair's Restaurant week -Feb. 2-8, 2009.
Girls swallowing swords? That's it? This is going to sound silly, but I've already sort of seen that one at a bar in Jersey, one late night at Redd's in Carlstadt right near the Izod Arena when the circus was in town.
Nah, Hell's Kitchen would have to offer something a bit stronger to get me down there. Good name for a place, though.

Don't know. I only go there when on Jury Duty and that has not been for 2 years. Might have been sold or might be the two of them on same street.
It was jam packed last time I was there. Huge sandwich!
Turkey, Roast Beef, Corned Beef, Pastrami, foot long hot dogs, burgers and lots more.
Maybe they had enough & retired....?
I guess if you like slumming, it might be interesting to eat in Newark. Too bad all the good ethnic food is there. The only thing I do in Newark is change trains or go to jury duty.
ok. I'll keep you posted on if the entertainment value goes up.
