West Orange Says No To Speed Hunting Deer

Monday, October 13, 2008

Essex County is planning a second sharpshooter deer hunt, but not all of the towns bordering the park are in support. From the Star Ledger...

The county needs permission from those three towns in order to obtain special permits for a controlled hunt, which allows sharpshooters to hunt deer freely from sunrise to sunset. Since West Orange rejected the plan, the hunters in that part of the reservation will only be allowed to kill two deer at a time. The deer must be brought to a check station and tagged before the hunters can return to their post.

Last year, hunters killed 213 deer during a monthlong hunt. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said it is critical to curb the population in order to protect vegetation. DiVincenzo has said the deer are also a nuisance to homeowners and drivers in the area. Last year, according to county officials, 303 deer were killed on county roads.

"(Though) there clearly is necessity for action, I simply disagree with the approach," said Council President Renard Barnes who voted against the measure. "There has to be a complete and comprehensive plan."

In Maplewood, the hunt is expected to get support from the five-member committee.

Victor DeLuca, a member of the township committee, said he plans to vote against the plan. He also voted against it last year.

"I'd like to explore more humane measures in dealing with the deer population," DeLuca said. "I've been reading and hearing the stories about last year's shoot. They're mixed at best."

DeLuca said he would like the county to use contraceptives to keep the population in check.

Memo to Joe:

Dear Joe,

I think I have a better solution to the deer problem in Essex County than a professional hunt. Just extend your offer of a $200 cash card for turning in a gun to a $400 cash card for turning in a gun used to shoot a deer (the deer would also have to be turned in). That way we get both the deer and the guns off the street. What's not to like?

Regards,

Conan

Round up the deer and install them in Joseph DiVincenzo's yard with a 10-foot fence. I'm sure he'll change his mind eventually.

I never understood why they don't use this as an opportunity---

1. Deer are over-populated in our area
2. People are going hungry
3. Deer venison tastes pretty good

The answer seems clear!

Questions about the humanity of such kills make me wonder if their "special deer management permit" covers the use of hollow-points... since that would help eliminate any undue suffering by the deer...

Conan--

Not a very good plan--- Most people want handguns off the street, you would just get rifles... Besides, you can get a cheap .22 for under $200, so I could just use your plan to make money....

People without guns will just find another way to kill eachother...

Why don't they just wait till November 5th & hire Sarah Palin & a small plane? She's got the experience under her belt & she'll be looking for work at that point.

Brendan, that's actually part of the solution. From NJ.com:

Marksmen who complete a minimum of eight half-day shifts of volunteer service will receive 40 pounds of venison and the rest of the meat will be donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. Last year the county donated enough venison to provide 32,000 meals to the needy and homeless.

Wow, I'm glad they are doing that! Every time I pass a car-mangled dear it always made me wonder when they would start working on two problems at once---

Now I'm really tempted to go and volunteer my service! (I don't hunt, but only because I'm not going to eat it)

Victor,
Way to go. Congrats for standing up against these a-holes. There are humane ways of dealing w/ this "nuisance". Isn't this a reservation? I don't understand how a reservation can be overpopulated w/ deer. This is a habitat specially reserved for wild life. Hunting is only a sport, when the deer are shooting back.

Most would argue that a reservation is over-populated with deer when the deer are forced off the reservation to forage for food...

Way to go, Victor, indeed!

Apparently the high frequency of traffic accidents on Pleasant Valley Way has something to do with the exploding deer population.

No, that must be taken back. If the deer population were exploding, drivers would have to dodge all the Bambi bits and bomb fragments.

Maybe that would make the game even more fun. "Hit the Deer and Make it Explode" could be the next rave game. Of course, you'd have to be lucky enough to find the one packing the least amount of dynamite.

Pick the wrong one and you move onto the next level, Flying with Rudolph.

On behalf of deer everywhere, I am pleased to announce the launch of our new driver training software, Virtual Venison.

This defensive driving course for new and current drivers is intended to create awareness on how best to share the road with all users.

We feel there is a definite need for this training. Most people visit the woods only as a means of getting from Point A to Point B. Deer, on the other hand, reside in these woods and spend each day enjoying their surroundings. Some of that time is spent getting from Meadow A to Shady Glen B.

Some activist deer see a highway and think "incursion" or "yuppie-fication", and have been known to band up with the Northern cousins of the Black Panthers, the Yellow Catamounts. Other deer are more willing to allow sharing the natural resources. It is this latter group that welcomes travelers and has created the program.

The hope is to release the software and its accompanying video, "Bumpers Hurt", at high schools nationwide in 2009. Until then, drivers are asked to be alert to their surroundings and enjoy the scenery.

I still think automatic-firing, antler-mounted rifles for every deer is the right solution. Maybe they could be designed to automatically fire upon Sarah Palin supporters -- there's certainly be fewer stupid people in the world.

I don't understand how a reservation can be overpopulated w/ deer.

All right, let me try and explain it to you. There's a nice girl deer walking around, and she runs across a good looking boy deer. They get to talking, and the boy deer asks her to go foraging in the reservation. She agrees. Once there, in the beauty and stillness of the outdoors, the boy deer yawns and places his hoof nonchalantly on the girl deer's shoulder...
