Interesting tidbit this morning from a tipster who attended the Wolf Parade concert last night at the Wellmont. Apparently, a chunk of the massively renovated building's ceiling fell during the performance ... on the stage, no less.
In the middle of Wolf Parade's performance, a small chunk of the ceiling fell on the lead vocalist, Spencer Krug, and his keyboard. It didn't hurt him, but his keyboard was a mess. Dan Boeckner, the main guitarist, responded: "If we don't die tonight, Steely Dan is dying tomorrow."Wolf Parade finished their performance despite the mishap. Given how much they rock and how much the audience was jumping around (there was even some stage-diving), it's no wonder the building started coming down.
Steely Dan plays the Wellmont next Monday and Tuesday. Andy Feltz, a principal at the new Wellmont, reached by phone, said he hadn't heard anything about a falling piece of ceiling. "I'm not aware of it," he said. "As far as I know, nothing happened."

The headline here is a bit off.
"Fan Sees Chunk of Wellmont Fall on Vocalist" sounds like something fell on a James Taylorish singer.
When what happened is the greatest of all rock cliches...
The tipster supplied an opening with: "Given how much they rock.."
So, perhaps BAND ROCKS THE CEILING OFF THE WELLMONT or WOLF PARADE ROCKS THE HOUSE-- LITERALLY... or something like that.
And you know The Parade (that's what those of us in the know call 'em), will be telling everyone that they rocked the roof off that joint.
i was there as well and from what i could see it looked like a little shower of small white bits...
i couldnt hear the second part of the "if we die..." comment because the sound was just awful....nice to have that cleared up.
All the more reason to buy seats on the second floor, where there are seats.
the sound was just awful....
If they don't remedy this problem soon they are going to get a bad rep as a place with crappy sound and no one will want to play there.
So let's see--this Feltz guy doesn't believe anything happened just because HE isn't "aware" of it? The act that's on stage commented on it, but maybe they were just imagining it. COME ON, PEOPLE.
It's funny... a huge piece also fell the first night during the counting crows. I have been to a few shows there already. If you look up at the ceiling (before last night) there was a huge hole where it fell during counting crows. Interesting news! Perhaps someone should address this issue.
"I wanna rock..."
Be careful what you ask for.
Mrs. Martta,
LOL!!!
WTF, I have tickets to see a show shortly. They are in the orchestra section near the stage.
First you tell me I might not have seats, to which it was said if you have seat number, then the seats will be there.
Now you tell me the ceiling might fall on me and my 16 yr, old daughter.
Cary responds to posts, I would like to know my daughter is safe. It's her 17th birthday present and the tickets were bought as soon as they went on sale. It IS a big night in her mind, so I'm loath to just ask for a refund.
I will, however find anybody responsible if we get hit by a falling ceiling...I want more than assurance as this is not a joke.
Breathe Pokey, breathe.
I'm breathin' relax, deeply. I have worked in high-end construction since high school. I got fired from my first job for complaining, then threatening to drop a dime on the authorities because of an electrician's work in a townhouse reno in NYC. Specifically installing cabinets over junction boxes, literally 2 didn't even have covers; they were open with live wires in them. To this day I'm glad the electrical fire broke out in an empty site and was contained before it spread to adjoining buildings, but still kick myself for not following through and calling the inspector (I was young & threatened). I've always followed my conscience since then in projects under my control, but there's a lot of crap work out there.
This was a rushed project to finish for the opening, I've seen as many as 25 people working in two rooms for 3 days to finish a job, I expect it was quality work (sarcasm alert).
I should probably qualify the implied threat in the previous post. I don't want the temporary satisfaction of beating the hell out of someone (make a nice movie though), I'm talking a very savvy lawyer who handles mostly this type of case :)
Concern, yes. Going as odds are in my favor.
Question to the town of Mtc:
Has any qualified person inspected the problem? Do you see this as a reason to re-inspect the WHOLE place? (I do)
But hey, everybody complains about shoddy building practices by the BOE, right? You complain about not having any control over the process, let's take it away from them you say. So what happened to oversight from the professional building inspectors whose job is to prevent those things from happening (that even the BOE is subject to)?
So tell me where my confidence should come from? It's a public space so this is my business, I would like to know the town is taking this seriously because of the potential of someone getting really hurt.
Don't worry. It was probably just a little asbestos.
Hey Pokey
Just to let you know....I went to the Counting Crows concert with tickets for seats in the balcony. The tickets were numbered and when we asked where our numbered seats might be, the usher told us that we should just take any seat, the numbers didn't mean anything.
From what I understand, there have not been any seats downstairs, just SRO. I'm not complaining...I enjoyed the show...but you might want to find out about your seats.
In Brooklyn days past, we were asleep in our half renovated apartment, and a massive chunk of plaster ceiling fell a few feet from our bed.
That'll wake you up.
Perlstein,
Certainly you meant to put quotes around "asleep," (or perhaps you could have just said, we were "wrestling" and a chuck of plaster fell...")
Talk about rockin' the house!!!
There are DEFINITELY seats available in the lower level--it's just not for all shows! We all had seats for Bill Maher. Were they numbered correctly? No. Did the staff have a clue about how the numbers worked? No. But we had seats.
Counting Crows shows were GENERAL ADMISSION for the lower level. SRO, no seat assignments.

Counting Crows shows were GENERAL ADMISSION for the lower level. I guess the upper level was also GA, but at least that group had seats.
Yea i was wondering about that because i have seats in the lower section for john legend but i keep hearing that there are none. maybe they just put them in for certain shows?
Actual seats on the lower level will only be available for comics, and "older" crowds ie. Tony Bennet. I was told this by the project manager for the renovation.
Bands now a days do not want seats, and it's a huge deterent... bands dont book halls with seats. They want a general admission standing room only atmosphere.
For Bill Mahr they closed the downstairs bars, and had seats all the way to the back wall.
It was a 'rush job' getting the venue ready on time. It stands to reason that they are having problems with sound and falling ceiling.
Driving by and seeing the phalanx of trucks and tour busses, I feel pity for the local businesses who, it seems, are SOL.
well at least the Pilgrim Medical Center is right across the street. hmmm. anyone know where I can apply for a sidewalk vending permit? I have a vanload of folding chairs to sell cheap. and bicycle helmets.
