Super Bowl hero David Tyree will be signing books next Monday (Dec. 15) from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls. To stoke interest, the museum is going to give two lucky winners a free book and admission to the event, along with some private time with the wide receiver. And each of the winners will be able to bring one guest along with no admission charge.
Remembering the fun we had back in 2005 with our Infield Fly Rule Haiku Contest, we've decided to reward two pithy poets with the Tyree tix. We're looking for 5-7-5 on Tyree, his famous catch, his writing career, or his time as a Mounty. Our official judge for the contest will be in-house bard Mista Barista, who promises to be as "incorruptible as a governor" in awarding the prize. Deadline is 5 pm tomorrow, Thursday Dec. 11. Submit your haikus as comments, below.
Tyree's book is "More Than Just a Catch: A True Story of Courage, Hope and Achieving the Impossible." Admission is $30, which includes the book and an autograph. If you can't attend, you can still order an autographed copy. More info: 973.655.2378.

But for luck they lose;
The planets align: they win.
Does this make a book?
Look at what I did;
sans a $3 million field house;
now I drive a bus.
two giant men
one took shot at history
one took shot at leg
Few people knew me
Then I made that famous catch
I'm still no Janet
A Syracuse grad,
a nice guy from Montclair,he's
the catch of the day.
He's a wide receiver
And a book author as well
Catch him in Montclair
I call it, "Your Salary Is More than My Town's Education Budget"
For millions of bucks
You caught a ball on your head
And I should care why?
I must temper my above haiku to say I've heard him speak before and he does truly seem like a nice guy. But the inequities of the system in which he participates are simply too great to go without comment.
Revamped version with right number of syllables:
A wide receiver
And a book author as well
Catch him in Montclair
More than just a catch,
he's clearly a natural;
proof all's possible.
I shall never see
a catch lovely as Tyree's
not even Willie's
It was a great catch
One to remember always
A legend is born
Montclair Mountie star
Special Teamer Pro-Bowler
Superbowl legend
The ball approaching
Arms extended, must catch it
Luck? Who cares? WE WIN!
The ball approaching
Arms extended, must catch
Luck? Who cares? WE WIN!
Tyree from Montclair
Leaps! Like magic, pass complete!
Giant hands pliant.
T?was a Miracle
Impossible to believe
Tyree caught the ball
Mista Barista:
Smart and handsome as ever!
Do I get the tix?
The moon rose over
Hoboken. No one noticed.
Tyree caught, wrote, sat.
The greatest catch ever
Millions for the team's owners
Now I warm the bench
The game in the balance
A leap of faith for the ball
Pademonium!!!
*new one spell checked
The game on the line
A leap of faith for the ball
Pandemonium
The luckiest catch
From the youngest Manning boy
equals fame, ring, book
Tyree leaps and falls...
(anxious fans cross their fingers)
pinning ball to head.
"Refrigerator"
Was once a football phenom
Now it is Tyree
Overcame a drug bust
Then made a truly stunning catch
Now languishes on IR
(But isn't he a former "Mountie" rather than a "Mounty?")
Hey! unless you pronounce "IR" as a single syllable, you busted your haiku, sir.
To IR is human?
wait a minute... each line is busted. Is this a test?
I pronounce "IR" the same way as Coach Coughlin and sportscaster Len Berman, appletony. So nyah nyah nyah to you!
Who could imagine
Ball to eighty-five's helmet
Tyree, what a catch!
Who could imagine
Ball to eighty-five's helmet
Tyree, what a catch!
