Sure, we've heard about the influx of banks and nail salons in Baristaville, but what we really might just be is the yoga capital of New Jersey. Here's a map of yoga choices just in Montclair alone. Now two more yoga centers are opening in Montclair. Coming soon to Watchung Plaza, in the spot formerly occupied by Irish and More (which moved to Church Street and was renamed Gifts on 16 ), is Yogadesha, founded by Rebecca Bergstrom. Over on Valley Road, near Montclair Bikery, Asana House, a yoga lounge with juice bar (pictured), opened last Saturday. Asana House is the creation of Charles Secallus and Deborah Williams; the premise..."a space for your practice in addition to a place where you can kick back, hook up to the internet and enjoy fresh juice combinations, smoothies, organic coffee, tea and homemade chai." Here's the class schedule.
So with all these yoga outlets, we must be an incredibly calm, peaceful group of folks here, yes? No crazy drivers or opinionated folks spouting vitriol, right? We're all just blissed out on tranquility. I admit it, I'm a yoga virgin, but with all this talk about yoga, I'm wondering if I'm missing out on some secret society of downward dogs. If you're a yoga enthusiast, give me your best pitch and tell me, can a gal who drinks two triple espressos every morning calm down enough to try this?
In the jump, Carl Bergmanson sends us news on more yoga in Glen Ridge...
The Glen Ridge Department of Recreation is pleased to offer an 8 week series of Sunday morning yoga classes to be held at Glen Ridge’s own yoga center – The Karuna Shala. Classes will be taught in a gentle flowing style focusing on linking movement and breath. Mat’s are provided free of charge.
The Karuna Shala is located 855 Bloomfield Ave., Suite 208 (2nd floor of Arcade).

Even if one does not buy into all the "woo woo" aspects of Yoga, it keeps us flexible, limber and well toned even as we age. All of which helps keep the sex life in good shape too.
Just like the 3 sushi joints uptown within a 2 minute walk, these yoga places will all put each other out of business. Lots of creative people in Montclair who have opened up shop, very few are good business people, which is their ultimate downfall. Good luck though, I will try and eat as much sushi as possible, but somebody else needs to pick up the slack on the yoga...I will be across the street at Tierney's.
Lotus Yoga moved recently from Midland Avenue to 7 North Willow Street. Their space is unbelievable.
Maybe all these yoga joints will mellow out all the Montclair drivers on steroids. A girl can dream.
I have a cat named Lotus. That's as close as I will probably ever come to participating in yoga.
I know, though, alot of people do get a lot out of it, so that is good.

I like yoga, don't love it. (I admit, I have fallen asleep on the mat once or twice). I like sports that get your heart pumping (like running). I do incorporate some yoga stretches into my pre-race warmup, though.
Anyone remember this guy?

You don't have to calm down to try it. Try it and it will calm you down. It's very strenuous exercise but very relaxing. You would be amazed at how hard your muscles have to work to hold those poses. It's not for everyone but it is worth a try.
MM, you should try Bikram (hot) yoga--there's a studio in Lackawanna Plaza. That one will make your heart pump!
I just want Qi Gong.
I had an excellent juice at Asana House. I will def be stopping in on the regular on my way home from the gym. Suprisingly, Montclair had a lack of proper juice or smoothie spots. Amazon Cafe is a bit on the grimy side and employed with rude punk kids. Get off of my lawn!
