Bloomfield Bakery’s Blind Customer Sting

Wednesday, Jan 28, 2009 11:41am  |  COMMENTS (20)

Customers at Gencarelli’s bakery in Bloomfield mostly passed the good Samaritan test during last night’s episode of “What Would You Do?” Customers observed the evil sales clerk insulting and short-changing a blind woman, and then a blind man (both actors). By-standers jumped to the rescue, becoming very emotional and vocal – no shrinking violets in Baristaville! One guy said he’d like to murder the clerk for his abusive behavior, while a couple of others offered therapy.
Watch the episode here, and tell us, would you step into a similar situation to help a stranger? And by the way, Gencarelli’s makes killer desserts…which one’s your favorite?

This guy stood out like a sore thumb. The usual clerks at Gencarellis are young ladies and an older lady. They are always pleasant and businesslike. Had I walked in as the regular customer I am, I think I ould have known immediatly what was up, having recognized the actor from the deli bit they did a few weeks ago in Hackensack.
That said, I was impressed with the patron’s reactions and thought it was a thought provoking piece.

It was interesting that women seemed more willing to step-up than men. Except for one guy who confronted the counter man by himself, most men didn’t enter the fray until a woman had the guts to step up first. Maybe men are concerned that it could lead to a physical confrontation. Anyway…good to see the locals do the right thing.

Next week on ABC News… We secretly put a bunch of actors in key township jobs in Montclair, NJ. Our hidden cameras followed the action as our plants intentionally ballooned the town budget, raised taxes to unsustainable levels, flew the high school principal back and forth to Florida, refused to plow roads and threw empty garbage cans on sidewalks. What would you do?

Aren’t there already actors in key township jobs. And Bike Boy and the Council members don’t generally look like they’ve mastered their parts.

Does anyone know what restaurant the man who helps the woman at the end owns? They say that he owns a restaurant down the street, and I’d like to give it a try considering he was such a stand up guy.

It was a very good piece! Good to see people stand up for them. Although, that guy during the first bit near the beginning of the line was a jerk just staring and laughing! Also, interestingly a blind couple really does live up the block from the bakery!

I love whatever the holiday special is. The graveyard cake for Halloween – the giant turkey ass for Thanksgiving, the bouche de noel, so tacky, so Jersey.

I stopped there at zero-dark-thirty this morning for pastries for my monthly “suck-up-with-the-big-bosses” meeting. Nothing like a Gencarelli cheese Danish to win brownie points with the expensive suits. The people working there have never been anything but nice to me – even at their busiest.

The way Annette did the write up, it sounds as though the two blind patrons were the actors, but not the person behind the counter. I suppose I should assume that this imprecision with the language is just Baristanet’s “style”.

“” I saw this last night and got excited to see the bakery. The house bit before that, where was that- livingston? “”
In it they say # 108 Shrewesbery Drive and that is in Livingston, off of Northfield Ave.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
