Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow announced Raymond Hyman, former superintendent of schools for Essex Fells, has been charged with pilfering more than $22,000 in tuition reimbursement from the Essex Fells Board of Education for a doctorate degree that he failed to complete.
Hyman, 46, of Bayonne, turned himself in this morning to the Essex prosecutors office, and was arraigned before Essex County Superior Court Judge Stephen J. Bernstein on charges of third-degree theft by deception, second-degree official misconduct, and fourth-degree forgery. If convicted on all the charges, Hyman could face up to 10 years in prison.
Officials state from the fall of 2005 to July 2008, the defendant allegedly claimed and received more than $22,000 in tuition reimbursement. Hyman, the superintendent of Essex Fells since 2003, began attending Columbia University’s Teachers College in 2003 and stopped attending in the fall of 2005. Following up on anonymous tips, an investigation was launched in 2008. Hyman was suspended by the Essex Fells Board of Education late last year'

Hymen Busted!
nicely done, MM.
we should really not jump to conclusions here. It is very possible that his accountant said it was ok.
Shady dealings in the school systems lately..
Snort! I want these people's accountants!
How many schools does tiny Essex Fells have that this guy rates the title of "superintendent?" I'm guessing just one.
See it often all starts with inflation. In the economy or either of grades or titles.
(ROC and Miss Martta were also pretty funny above.)
I think you're right, Cathar. I think it's just one elementary school. Kids from EF go to West Essex for both junior high and high school.
Poor guy, if he was in Washington for a U.S. Senate confirmation hearing it would be "oh well, I guess he forgot" no problem.
Certainly seems details missing. BOE must have published policy, and approval process, for educational reimbursement. Was he "approving" his own expenses? I would hope the highest level person of any organization should not be able to approve their own expenses. Corporately, this would be the role of the CFO of the BOE. Unless he never actually registered/met the criteria. Partial PhD credit may have also inflated his Salary/Benefits, or may have been a condition of employment (progress towards the degree). Proper management controls/audits should not have allowed this to happen, if true; and should be a function of State Guidelines. Hope Mtclr process not like this.

You mean like the crazy inflation we're going to see because the douchebags in charge right now keep printing money to try to get us out of the economic hole they dropped this country into due to their deregulation of the banking industry? Why is no one talking about the horrifying effects that inflation is going to bring over the next few years. We can't just keep printing money! CNBC economists are now estimating the total cost of *all* of the bailouts to be more than $10 trillion, which is more than our entire national debt. Sure I like Obama, but he's going to have to be a miracle worker to clean up the festering pile of shit left to him by this outgoing Bush Administration.
But it'll be okay, folks. Cathar will come up with 20 different fanciful words to tell us that a $20 loaf of bread is normal and ROC will just parrot Rush Limbaugh and blame the whole mess on Obama (even though he's clearly not at fault). The hidden cost of inflation is going to absolutely devastate this country. Bread lines, Poor houses. 20% unemployment (25% if you count it the way it was counted 50 years ago).
MM: Thanks for the New York Post headline!
LOL...that's what I thought of when I wrote it.
Apparently one Essex Fells BOE member raised the question about Hymen's degree, reimbursements, etc a while ago. Hymen claimed she was harrassing him and the other BOE members backed him and eventually the BOE member raising the objections resigned. Turns out she was right.
He can share a cell with the Nutley lady.
thank god Obama wants to put the brakes on all reckless spending so he won't bear any fault.
ROC you are tiresome. There's more to life than a government smaller than a guy's reproductive organ after hitting the ocean in midwinter.
Anyway, this fella didn't try that imploding small plane windshield alibi.

Doesn't your wife work for the Montclair BOE??
Another guilty until proven innocent case.
MM, great post. Ever thought about a career in the service?
Another dumb as a post educrat with the morals of a Clinton.
In DC it's douchebags to the left, douchebags to the right
Here we are stuck in the inflationary middle.

And what service would that be? The Armed Services? Would love to but I am too old.
CRICKET, I'd be bashing any administration that's done as terrible a job as the Bush Administration has done over the last 8 years. Do you truly disagree that this is the case? I'd sure like to live in your rainbows-and-sunshine world of make-believe. Reality has finally caught up with his ignorant and myopic policies and now everyone's suffering. Empty cans are at least worth their bottle refund. All I get from the empty-headed mouthbreathers and Limbaugh dittoheads is hot air and ignorance, neither of which help to pay the bills.
sooth:
Well, since it was Carter and then Clinton who pushed affirmative action in lending (under threat of law suit by Andrew Cuomo), and Clinton who signed the Grahm Leach Bliley act into law regarding the regulation you believe caused the current crisis, I'd say your criticisms are misplaced.
Also, Bush tried to stop the lending as far back as 2003, but Congress wouldn't allow it. As recently as 2008 Barney Frank accused him of trying to injure poor people, and that fannie and freddie were if fine shape. Oops.
Lastly, since we've been kept safe from terrorist attacks for over 7 years now, yes, I think Bush has been a pretty good president given the period, although I disagree with certain things - such as the new drug entitlement program.
Criticism is easy, especially after the fact, while we sit in safety in front of our computers and TV's.
