Pretty soon there will be a Thai restaurant and a yoga studio for every denizen in Baristanet. The newest, The Karuna Shala in Glen Ridge, is holding an open house this Saturday (Jan. 10, 1-4 pm) to welcome itself to the neighborhood. Look here for a schedule that includes some short yoga classes and free 20-minute massages.
Shown here is Mary Paige Snell, Bloomfield school organizer extraordinaire as well as yogi, who teaches a Saturday 11 am yoga class at Karuna Shala -- starting things off with her portable harmonium.
Yogi novices, you should know that most studios offer free "community" classes at no charge. Garden State Yoga in Bloomfield is offering community Pilates for beginners from 12:45 to 1:45 pm on Sundays, followed by a free open mat yoga class. Lotus Yoga offers three four community classes weekly. Share your favorite yoga teachers, studios and classes here.

I like her haircut.
I was thinking exactly the same thing, Mrs. M. I used to have a bob and looking at her made me think I should go back to the style.
This is very good news: perhaps I can get all of these new ventures to help me market my new fruit-flavored exercise fitness drink, "Yoga Berry."
I have a business proposition for you, Conan. Let's open a yoga school for overweight men. We'd be a first!
i met her! she's so nice, i want to take one of her classes because i suspect she'll be very forgiving and friendly with us 'newbies'.

...and just think of how much we could make on the film clips. {8>{)>>
fyi- this is Mary-I teach at Lotus, too. I respect both studios- both owners are amazing people- and we are really fortunate to have a whole crop of fantastic yoga teachers out here. Just for the record- I get my haircut at Supercuts.
My problem with yoga is not the fee but the difficulty in finding the time. Perhaps class should be held on the buses and trains. This could be a golden opportunity for DeCamp to improve customer relations.
I've actually been thinking of giving yoga a try. Any favorite schools for newbies?
I just want to open my purse and give her all of my cash!
Right, sister! Bring the wine and I'll give you Yoga and Yogi!
Mary,
Namaste.... from the Glen Ridge Cong Yoga class.
p.s. Where did you get that harmonium??
I don't know where you've been but we sure miss your humor Laura. And I'll bring a box of wine.
You go, Mary Paige Snell. If I take your yoga class, will I have a body like you? By the way, great work on the playground fundraising. See, worse thing can happen then living in Jersey.

Re: favorite schools for newbies.
Iyengar is my bias. If it's not your style you're free to move on to another style, but if you're just trying yoga to see if it's right for you, an Iyengar teacher is going to help you work to your level and not kill you (or any part of you such as your knees).
The Yoga and Meditation Center of Montclair is a good place to find out what your level is. I studied there for 9 years before moving on to more a more hard-core Iyengar studio.
The Starseed beginner classes are safe bets.
Don't start with anything billed as "Power" or "Vinyasa" unless you are confident that you're fit (e.g. strong and capable of jumping around a lot and doing pushups).
Adult schools can be a good place to start because there's continuity of signing up for a series. "Drop-in" yoga is not great for beginners.
It would probably be self-serving to suggest the Montclair Adult School, Thursday night 7:30 class -- it's a "continuing beginner" level with an Iyengar focus. You can sign up now online, I think.
