Becky Bowser Lowenthal, an MKA graduate and formerly of Montclair, died suddenly on January 20, in Potomac, MD. Lowenthal was 43.
Becky’s community of friends and family share memories and condolences on Facebook. RK, a family friend sends us this tribute:
Rebecca was born in Montclair, New Jersey, and was the daughter of Hamilton and Merle Bowser.
She was the wife of Andrew Lowenthal, formerly of Rye, New York and New York City, and the mother of three children, Nicholas, 12, Julia, 9, and Jonathan, 5. Rebecca is also survived by her brother Hamilton V. Bowser, Jr., her sister Jennifer Bowser Gerst, her parents-in-law Malcolm and Joan Lowenthal, her sister-in-law Hilary Rosen and so many friends and family.
A graduate of Montclair Kimberley Academy and Yale University, Rebecca served as Director of Public and Governmental Affairs at the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission. During the Clinton administration she received a Presidential appointment in the U. S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., serving under all three Secretaries of the Treasury.
Becky was deeply involved in many civic activities in Potomac and Montgomery County generally. She was active in all of her children’s schools, most recently on the Board of the Parents Association of The Bullis School.
“Motion” is a word that leaps to mind when observers saw Becky with her family. She seemed to live in her car, traveling to two or three schools at a time, to music lessons, to dance classes, to theater groups, to Cub Scout meetings, to whatever activity involved her children. Yet she carved out time to sit on the floor and play Boggle or monopoly with Julia and Nick, or Candyland with Jonathan.
Yet Becky herself gave much beyond her enthusiasm for her husband and children. She was an avid reader when she could find time, and participated heartily in her book club with friends. She loved the outdoors, from the calm, quiet waters of The Beach where her heart lay, to the deserts and mountains of Utah where her spirit soared. She loved music and played three instruments – piano, violin and flute. She was a gifted singer who never fully acknowledged the pleasing, smooth tones of her alto voice, honed at MKA and in the Yale Glee Club and in her singing group Whim ‘n’ Rhythm.
The warmth, intelligence and insightfulness that made Becky a treasured sibling, friend, daughter, partner and mother are her gifts to those she has left behind. If we were to set her image to music, her tempo would be allegro and her tone, the deep full resonance of the cello.
As her life was cut off so sharply and so soon, we will remember her always as a vibrant young woman living in the fullness of her family and community, with arms extended to embrace us all in warmth and love.
