With so many small businesses struggling to survive the depressed economy, we're happy to hear from an perky Barista whose business is bubbling. Several months ago, we wrote about The Fine Grind in Little Falls, and owner Rhonda Mallek's drive and determination to thrive as an indie coffee house owner. The latest buzz is how The Fine Grind is not only thriving, but expanding. After four years of operation, the owners have moved their java, pannini, and patisserie shop around the corner to roomier digs outfitted with lots of comfy seating and a fireplace. Mallek, who says she didn't lose a day of business moving from one location to the other, modestly attributes her success to her loyal customers, dedicated staff, and "community support. "I've had customers and other shop owners come and congratulate us and offer to help move furniture, help set up...a chain coffee shop wouldn't get that kind of support - it's an awesome feeling."
"Despite a down economy, our customers keep coming. We fall into the "affordable luxury" category. You can come in for a pannini, drink and dessert in cozy, comfortable surroundings and it won't break the bank."
Mallek says they probably lost some customers at their former location, because it was tiny, and parking was difficult. Problem solved.
A second Fine Grind will open in about a week, in the former Sanctuary Coffee shop space, Main and Paterson Streets in Little Falls. "It's a great location, in the heart of the village," says Mallek. "The Fine Grind Downtown" described as a "beautiful boutique-type space with the original old bar and copper ceiling" will offer the same menu and coffee concoctions as the new, contemporary-style store on Route 23. Customer favorites include the bountiful Thanksgiving Pannini and a super-indulgent chocolate dessert, "The Ridiculous." Go find out what it's all about.

I've been to the Fine Grind once, during my road trip actually when I had to stop back in Montclair to pick up my mail. Jules and Deb, the girls who were working there when we stopped by, were THE friendliest baristas I've ever met. The coffee was good, the food was good, and the atmosphere was nice and comfortable. I'll have to stop by and check out their new location.
I love the Fine Grind, and the new location is better because it's got a lot more tables and space. The drinks are excellent, music isn't too loud, and atmosphere is low-key and pleasant for adults. The only problem I have with the new place is the track lighting needs to be directed to reflect off walls instead of in patrons' faces at some tables. But some growing pains are to be expected in a new building.
