Renaissance School has been banned from future use of Madonna Hall at Immaculate Conception Church. Apparently, dust from the Asbestosgate scandal last spring hasn't entirely settled - Immaculate has denied the school district use of the hall unless Montclair BOE absolves them from "any current or future environmental requirements that may arise if it is characterized as an educational facility."
No way, says Superintendent Frank Alvarez. In a letter to Renaissance School parents, Alvarez states "The attorneys for the Montclair Board of Education have advised the district that we cannot release Immaculate Conception from their responsibilities as the owner of the building."
For years, Madonna Hall, located across the street from Renaissance School, has been the meeting place for Science Fairs, student exhibitions, parent orientation meetings, audio-visual presentations, and of course student lunch. Now, says Alvarez, they are looking for alternatives and suggestions to improve the kids' lunch hour. You can read Alvarez's letter here.

ON the one hand were told it's safe to use that space by the school district. But there're NO WAY they are going to take responsibility for that safety!
.... assuring.
Sigh.
Which is also my reaction to your birthday today, jerseygurl. Have a happy one, and don't do anything I probably happily would.
Who will absolve Dr. Alvarez from his responsibility in the Asbestos Gate matter? The BOE is responsible for inspecting all school facilities and making sure that they are acceptable. The BOE did not do it's job in this matter.
Dear Baristas
Could you possibly ask Dr. Alvarez where, and in in what lease agreement does it say that Immaculate Conception is responsible for certifying Madonna Hall as an Educational Facility?
It's time to move to Millburn.
Happy birthday, gurl! Me and a few of my friends recorded this just for you.
Jerseygurl, enjoy a liberal piece of birthday cake on your special day!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Thanks Walleroo and Nellie!
Great recording, roo.
Oh and thanks Cathar too! Sorry, didn't see it the first time. I won't be doing anything crazy. Just dinner in Montclair with DH.
What's a DH? Dear Husband?
Happy 29th JG! Right before you go out for dinner drink a double martini and take a big bong hit and you'll feel like 17 again! :)
Da Husband, MellonBrush. Gotta get with it. I wouldn't know what a bong looked like anymore if one hit me on the head. The Martini sounds good though! Thanks!
I went to renaissance and ate in that room. if I get melanoma, who can I sue?
Since a lotion dispenser was installed just outside the door containing spf 500 with a warning sign not to enter the room without it, you probably can't sue anyone.
I suspect Immaculate doesn't want the middle school kids destroying the newly renovated Madonna Hall, and this was a good way to get them out!
I thought that the story was
The Board of Education (BOE) requested fire door replacement, then failed to withdraw that request after learning asbestos was present.
Dana Sullivan, the BOE?s safety officer, assumed, without investigation, this work wouldn?t involve asbestos-containing plaster.
Superintendent Frank Alvarez placed Ms. Sullivan in a position of authority for which she had no training.
Under OSHA regulations, both the Newark Archdiocese and BOE should have had a current program in which all asbestos in the buildings was identified.
The BOE had no such program, abdicating the safety of the children to the Archdiocese.
