County to Acquire Iris Gardens

Tuesday, Feb 24, 2009 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (56)

It’s more complicated than dividing an iris rhizome, but essentially the deal is this. Essex County will buy the Walther House of the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens for $1.1 million, which will shore up the non-profit’s much-depleted endowment. The township of Montclair will sell the iris gardens themselves – home to some 4,000 irises that attract an international audience each spring – to Essex County for $1. In turn, the county is to lease the gardens, which border Mountainside Park, back to Presby for $1 a year. Actually, as Presby prez Fran Liscio explained to us, the county will own the land the irises sit on, but the rhizomes themselves are actually owned by the Citizens Committee of Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, a group of 55 iris-loving citizens.

NJ Slaps Ticketmaster in Springsteen Case

Tuesday, Feb 24, 2009 10:41am  |  COMMENTS (21)

Memo from the Boss: don’t mess with my fans.

Ticketmaster reached a national settlement yesterday after an investigation by New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram, a call for antitrust hearings from Representative Bill Pascrell, and an order to ‘cease and desist’ from The Boss himself. As reported in NJ.com, disgruntled fans called the Attorney General’s office by the hundreds after attempting to purchase tickets for the upcoming Bruce Springsteen concert from Ticketmaster’s website on February 2. Customers hoping to buy tickets through the lottery system were redirected without warning to the website of TicketsNow, a subsidiary of Ticketmaster and a secondary seller. There, tickets were offered at considerably higher prices – up to a 400 percent markup in some cases – despite the availability of face value tickets at the time.

Is That the Dow Plunging, or My Heart?

Tuesday, Feb 24, 2009 9:11am  |  COMMENTS (80)

How low can it go? Yesterday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 250 points to 7,114. A year ago, it was at 12,380.
Brian Lehrer, on WNYC, has asked his listeners to report their “uncommon economic indicators” on a special web page. These are the anecdotal stories we all have about the way the ongoing financial crisis is affecting us and the people around us.
I’ll start. I bought a little wooden necklace with an etching of a lotus on it for $12 last Saturday. Since I have plenty of necklaces, even that small expenditure seemed a bit extravagant. Have I stimulated the economy just a teensy weensy bit? Or in a year, will the stock market be down to 3,000 and that $12 will represent three rice-and-beans dinners I could have had?
Give us your uncommon economic indicators. Are you still seeing crowds out on Saturday nights? Or are you sitting at home with your Netflix?

Who Wants To Be A High School Principal?

Monday, Feb 23, 2009 12:34pm  |  COMMENTS (62)

The search is on, again, for someone to claim the title of Montclair High School principal. The news came home to parents in this letter from Dr. Alvarez…

Montclair High School has sustained its high performance under the leadership of Dr. Judith Weiss. Unfortunately, Dr. Weiss cannot complete another full-year of service due to personal commitments. She will remain with us through June 30, 2009.
In order to plan for a smooth transition, we will initiate the principal’s search process immediately. The district will advertise in local, tri-state, and trade publications. We will also use our professional contacts — such as the Minority Student Achievement Network, District Management Council, Tri-State Consortium, and others — to seek out the best possible candidates. We currently have approximately 70 resumes on file from individuals who expressed interest when we first advertised in the fall.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
