In Verona, a neighbor filmed DPW Superintendent Charles Molinaro using a municipal truck and other municipal resources for personal use.
From the Verona-Cedar Grove Times

The superintendent, Charles “Chuck” Molinaro, has worked for Verona for 24 years.
According to Verona Township Manager Joseph A. Martin, Molinaro is permitted to drive the municipal-owned truck to his Verona home because he is on call 24 hours a day.
Verona has no written policies or guidelines governing use of municipal-owned equipment.
“I assign and set the operating standards for municipal vehicle use,” Martin wrote to the Times on Feb. 13.

Great News For Great Falls

The Great Falls in Paterson get national recognition. Legislation was approved yesterday to designate about 35 acres of the Paterson Great Falls Historic District as a new unit of the National Park System.
The Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park Act was approved as part of the Omnibus Public Lands Act by a vote of 285-140 clearing the park’s final hurdle in Congress. President Obama is expected to sign off on it as early as next week.
Rep. Pascrell said in a statement: “We have finally done it. Beginning today, Paterson, New Jersey will finally be fully recognized for the seminal role it has played in shaping American history.”

Property Tax Appeals 101

Wednesday, Mar 25, 2009 4:09pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

Business may be slack for much of the economy, but these are boom times for property tax attorneys. The annual deadline for filing property tax appeals in New Jersey comes up next Wednesday, April 1 at 4 pm. Livingston tax attorney Michael Schneck has already filed or is in the process of filing 2,200 cases — a 50 percent rise in his caseload since last year. He doesn’t have time for any more. Montclair property tax attorney Greg Lotz has also been “flooded with calls” this year. “People are just trying to save a dollar anywhere they can,” he speculates. Lotz is still taking new clients on.
Homeowners around here have always complained about property taxes. But with house prices falling, many people see a possibility that their property is overvalued. Home values are also very much in the heads of Glen Ridgers, whose homes underwent a revaluation last year, and Montclarions, whose reval was the year before. Bloomfield, you’re next. Your revaluation will be in the next two years.
So, time is running out. You have no idea what to do. Here are some suggestions.

More Senseless Destruction

Wednesday, Mar 25, 2009 2:58pm  |  COMMENTS (24)

On Monday, we were mocked for writing a story about kids tossing pudding snacks out of speeding vehicles. Today we can report an equally senseless if more conventional act of apparent teenage boredom. A blue Subaru owned by Beth Burke of Montclair was keyed not once but twice in the past 10 days, both times at the Watchung train station parking lot. The first time it was the “F” word. A week later, the words “lots of p*ssy” were added.
Just kids being kids? To the tune of $470, which is the estimate Burke got from an auto body shop to make her car whole. “Who does this? Whose kids would do this?” asks Burke, who was embarrassed to tell the police department over the phone what was scratched into her car. “It’s just completely unacceptable.”
Anybody else getting keyed in town parking lots? And what’s your response? What would you do if you found out it was your kid who had done the keying?

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
