The Discovery of Bloomfield

We’ve been writing about it all along, but now the culinary wonders of Bloomfield are on NJ Monthly’s radar map. Here’s their story about a Bloomfield-Montclair restaurant rivalry.

Here we go again, LINKS to REAL journalism….
    Unbelievable!
I come here for original reporting of ideas, policies and people that make up Baristaville (which,….. is an ORIGINAL name, or did the Montclair Times coin it first?)
But seriously, this blog will fail miserably if it continues to link to other sources, tells us about lost pets, gives the occasional original post, is fun, has great commenters(ors), offers baristakids to us parents, features targeted ads to local business for those of us who like to keep it local……
    Really, a recipe for disaster!!!!!!

No doubt like others who lurk this site, I’ve refrained from responding to the slow news, not journalism complaints. I realize that they’re fueled by certain news articles and statements by Deb et al. about the purpose/function of Baristanet.
Nevertheless, I can still my thought no longer:
Like those purveyed by its namesake–that espresso-and-gossip slinger at the corner coffee joint–the stories on this site are, by and large, of the “didja hear” “didja know” variety, some up to the minute, some not, some, ehrm, hyperlocal, others just interesting to the person purveying, and to many others.
If that’s not what you want in your coffee cup, spit it out and walk on. But don’t spit in _my_ coffee cup. Enough.

prof – How can Bnet possibly fail with the amount of traffic you and cathar generate every day just to tell Bnet what a failure it is?

I guess the question is, how can it succeed with folks like you who are incapable of comprehending a post obviously written in jest?

I think the prof was being sarcastic, something that does not always translate well in this medium. Or maybe it’s just over the heads of audience.
Anyway, I’m happy to read in the linked NJ Monthly article of Bloomfield’s growing status as a dining destination. I hope that trend continues.
My fave is Stamna. I’ve had family come up from the shore just to go there, it’s that good. However, I do think the State Street Diner is overrated; alas, the decor is more appealing than the food.

Pork Roll, I agree. I went to Stamna with my friends almost a year ago. My grilled shrimp dinner was fabulous. My husband wants to try somewhere different for dinner. Maybe we’ll go there next weekend. Thanks for reminding me!

Fair enough–on another reading, and even before your ruler-rapping, I got the sarcasm. Consider me over-reactive in the Pavlovian sense but right in principle. May we clink cups and continue?

Don’t forget Toscana’s. To say the least they have struggled with the consistency of the help and the food. The owner is really busting it to try and make it happen. If you haven’t tried a bar pie there yet you are doing yourself an injustice, FANTASTIC.

Misprint: They say that Michi is a Japanese restaurant. And they are right. Er, were right. Michi has been replaced by Kira Kira for almost a year, so I am guessing the reporter hadn’t been down to Broad street in quite some time. I thought the whole point of having a journalist on salary was to go out and investigate?

    Prof,
When I first started reading your post I thought we were at the beginning of a certain someone’s RANTS with the interestingly placed CAPS FOR EMPHASIS.
    Thanks for the laugh.

Stamna is wonderful! Filakias to them!
And the people at Aki, Pandan, Brookside Thai, Aroma, etc., also make you feel like they really want you in their restaurants — something somtimes lacking at the bigger names in the area. They all serve excellent food at reasonable prices, and you can save a bundle at the BYOs. We have not tried Bohemia yet, but it is on the list. (Not being too fond of pisco sours, perhaps I can talk them into making a capirinha or two.)
Montclair, are you listening: FREE PARKING IN THE EVENING IN BLOOMFIELD.

Conan, Montclair hears ya– and doesn’t care:
IN ORDER TO PAY $15,000 PER PUPIL WE MUST CHARGE!!
PERHAPS BLOOMFIELD SHOULD TOO SINCE IT ONLY SPENDS $11,600.
Montclair likes to talk in Caps…. Because it is a VERY important town.
    Very special.

The real journalist at NJ Monthly got it wrong about Willie’s Diner. It didn’t burn down. The owners needed to fix the foundation so they tore the place down and built it up anew as the State Street Grill.

Surprised there is no mention in the NJ Monthly article about the IHOP on Broad and Watchung. As far as international fare goes, I don’t think there is one restaurant in Montclair that even comes close.

Pajama’s media is right. I’m glad to see the area getting its due, but the piece is full of errors, as already pointed out above. Obviously someone didn’t so the leg work. I do notice a correction was made about how far the other restaurants are from Holsten’s.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
