“Cats are the secret to happiness,” says Sue Kasdon, with a simple conviction that reminds us of Tolstoy. Kasdon, who’s now exhibiting a cat-themed art show at the Montclair Public Library, didn’t get her first cat, Lucky, until her 20′s. She now has five.
Kasdon has managed to combine two of her loves, all things feline and ceramics, in a series of painted and relief tiles she’s been working on for more than a decade. She studied for 10 years with Montclair artist and teacher Elizabeth Smith Jacobs. Then, while working at the Newark Museum, she taught classes about canopic jars, an ancient art form, and it ultimately led to the idea for Immortal Cat, which provides memorial boxes to hold the ashes of old feline friends. The tiles (and several funerary boxes) will be on display at the library, 50 S. Fullerton Ave., through April 29.
Most of the tiles in Kasdon’s show are 6″ x 6″. Originals sell for $70 to $300; reproductions are available much cheaper.
The public is invited to a reception for the show tomorrow night (Tuesday) at the library from 7 to 9 pm.
Disclosure: Sue Kasdon is a personal friend.

Aah..Debbie, this must be the story you spoke of earlier. I will stop by the library and see this.
“Cats are the secret to happiness”
I couldn’t agree more. I’ll try to make it to the show as well.
I can’t tell you how many cat related items we have in our house. It must be at least one hundred, not including the cats. I guess a couple more wouldn’t hurt…
Well, I’m very happy for ya’ll but I’m sure my Kelly will turn up her little, wet, black nose at this.
Where’s equal time for dawgs?
Sometimes I think the whole world is going to the dogs.
If cats are the secret to happiness why is cathar so miserable. He has 10 cats.
If cats are the secret to happiness why is cathar so miserable? He has 10 cats.
cather has 10 cats?
no wonder why we find him SO IRRESISTIBLE…
Cats are the secret to happiness? Maybe. Or maybe its just an improvement because cat owners look so homely
not including all the cat owners on this site, of course
Good retraction, Jimmy
Mikey, was that post of yours just an example of your (very occasional, to be sure), uh, “stridency?” Or a hint re your own inability to connect socially with either humankind or animals? (T’was never me, mikeychum, who used to send private messages via the Forums suggesting getting together for a drink and that you’re “not that bad” once someone knows you. Pah! You are that bad and worse, I’m completely sure.)
Oh well, laser doofus, feel free to buy some cat toys to play with yourself. I’m sure you can handle the plastic ball with a bell in it, if not quite the hanging fishie on an elastic cord which you’re supposed to swat at.
More dog stories!? Every time I turn on Nat Geo, we’re back at Dogtown. When are they going to show us Cat town. I know they have one out there at the animal sanctuary in Utah……PAZ in PHX
Won’t you take me to Cat Town! (sung to the tune of Funkytown)
Equal coverage of cats and dogs!!!
Dude, I don’t know where you come up with this crap.
I think you might be describing yourself.
I enjoyed seeing Ms. Kasdon’s artwork last night. Also seemed like a fair amount of people showed up, which is nice.
Thanks, Baristas, for the info!
I was watching American Idol last night on my glowing, 37″, HiDef image/sound neural transmitter last night.
If I hadn’t been watching this I might have gone to the show at the library.
btw, Allison Iraheta completely blew me away. She may win this competition as she is a truely gifted vocalist. Her rendition of the Bonnie Raitt song, “You Can’t Make Me Love You” brought tears to my eyes and shivers to my spine. Amazing.
