Car Accident Near Caldwell College

Tipsters wrote in to report a car accident this afternoon on Bloomfield Ave.

Traffic was stopped in both directions. It looked as if the jaws of life had to be used to take the car's roof off. A white BMW SUV ran into the back of a tractor trailer. The entire front of the car was trapped under the truck. Verona PD and Rescue were on the scene.

What was a tractor trailer doing on Bloomfield Ave.?

I wonder if the SUV driver was talking on his/her cell phone...

Now nellie, a chara, you know I love you.

But how exactly do you suppose that the things for sale on Bloomfield Avenue get to.... Bloomfield Avenue?

They aren't carted there via rickshaw. No sledges. Never an elephant. No burros. Your absurd American laws make it impossible to shanghai a few high schoolers to do the heavy lifting.

Trucks, luv. Trucks are the only way.

Let's not assume cell phones or anything - this is pretty hideous.
As an aside...
Today, driving along Claremont some absolute ****-**** in a MASSIVE SUV pulled in to my car, I had to break and (had unth of a one second to check my mirror, then) mount the sidewalk to avoid the SUV, and I avoided it by only a smidgen of a millemeter. The SUV then turned in to their drive as I beeped, and looked on shocked - the female driver turned and scowled - I don't think she had seen my saloon vehicle at all. Maybe she had been on auto-pilot, but flipping scary stuff. Should I have blocked her car in, called the police and reported it???

Yeah my friend was driving to come pick me up and was there when it happened. We went back up there an hour later and the wreck was still there. He said it was a woman who had been in the car. The were directing traffic and we were stopped long enough for me to get this picture, but man, this was just horrifying. I really feel for the victim and her family.

I am on the road ALOT, and I am a very careful driver and I also watch other drivers, all the time. Talking strictly SUVs and women, the safest women SUVers are driving either Jeeps or Buicks.
All the rest are about equal. Sadly, the most aggressive are in either BMWs , Toyo Highlanders or Ford Explores. They are very aggeressive drivers. About on a par with a 18 Y.O. male in a Corvette. The #1 thing they do that I cannot understand is they race like all heck up to a RED light. They see the thing TURN red and are 2 tenths of a mile from it and are STILL accelerating ! Why ?
BUT, I have no facts pertaining to this above accident, and I am certainly not casting any dark shadow over this poor woman.
SLOW DOWN OUT THERE! GET OFF THE DAMN CELL PHONE
CONCENTRATE.
I hope this here woman is alive and not seriously hurt.

To get wedged that far under the trailer, the driver must have been completely distracted, or have been medically incapacitated. Semi-trailers like that have a horizontal bar mounted on the rear of the trailer, below the rear doors, designed to prevent this type of accident, but the car completely snapped off that safety bar. If you look closely at the pic, it's the square tubular thing on the ground behind the front wheel of the car.

Sandy's right. Put down the damn phone and pay attention! People don't realize that it only takes a split second of inattention for a horrible accident like this to occur. That is, not until it happens.

I hope the woman is all right after an accident like this. Bloomfield Ave is definitely one of the most dangerous roads I've ever experienced.

Sandy- how completely misogynistic of you. I've seen just as many bad male drivers as I have female, and I suppose like yourself, I drive around a lot. This stereotype that women are bad drivers is unfair and outdated. I, and I'm sure others, would appreciate it if you did not continue this needless stereotype.

Oh man, Sandy, the BMW drivers are just awful. Do people drive that way because they own BMWs or do they buy BMWs because they drive that way?

As far as cell phones, I didn't think it could get much worse, but it really is bad.

I saw this on my way home last night and the only thing that went through my head was "There's no way that driver even tapped his/her brakes. I wonder if he/she was mucking about with the radio or on the phone."

Unrelated, but later that night, I was almost hit by a woman driving a sedan while on her cell phone and writing something with a pen!

(Fortunately, she was going slow enough that I was able to pull the baby carriage out of the way in time.)

I find Saturn drivers to be the worst.

Something about the "No Haggle" sales seems to the draw overly cautious--- at times, the worst drivers. You know, the ones that stop at intersections that do no have Stop signs?

Hate them.

I also don't trust folks who drive old beat up cars-- that tells me something.

While we're making generalizations about drivers - I've never seen a Stutz driver who wasn't drunk and reckless.

Where on Blfd Ave did this happen? So does anyone know if the driver (or passengers) are ok?

The Bearcat didn't have cup holders, so one had to balance one's cocktail either between one's legs (no automatic transmissions on Bearcats, either) or just drink it down. I kept a long flagon of gin in the inside pocket of my raccoon coat, so the only time I had to drive with my knees was when i was unscrewing the cap. You bring back memories, McPaul...

How fast do you have to be going to get that, uh, wedged? I'm no expert, but if 25mph will do that, then folks REALLY oughta be payin' more attention.

" Oh man, Sandy, the BMW drivers are just awful. Do people drive that way because they own BMWs or do they buy BMWs because they drive that way? "

Good question, but I have no idea which came first !
VIOLET....get a damn grip on yourself. I NEVER said, nor implied that woman are bad drivers. The human being driving this car was a female. Blzme the reporter for giving away that info !! Many males are rotten careless drivers. Sex has nothing to do with it.
I will state that I see far more WOMEN yakking away on their cell phones WHILE driving, than I see MEN doing that. THAT is what I said. It is true.

Sex has zero to do with:
ability to be a great driver

Okay? I said nothing to carry on the old myth
that woman are worse drivers than men.
YOU read what you wanted into it !!!!!!!!

Its a proven fact that driving any German vehicle causes brain damage and malignant selfishness.

True, sex has nothing to do with driving ability. Now, being from New Jersey (or New York or Boston), well, that's another story...

They aren't carted there via rickshaw. No sledges. Never an elephant. No burros. Your absurd American laws make it impossible to shanghai a few high schoolers to do the heavy lifting.

Croiagy, you gave me a much-needed laugh last night.

Females OR Males who drive for a living are well trained and go through many intensive hours on AND OFF the road. They ARE professionals ! Find me one Semi driver driving AND talking on a cell phone while working. You won't be able to. They follow every rule of the road. This truck was hit in the back. It was hit, it did not hit. It was hit. What the reason was is unknown. Top choices might be inattention, speeding, vehicle malfunction (brakes well worn or defective), liquor, or speeding, would come to mind, also heart attack or other health related issues, or a combination of more than one that I listed.

My guess? Inattention. That's what the police say is the #1 factor in most accidents. Changing CDs or cassettes - answering an incoming call, or text messaging while driving.
Both sexes fo these things, Violet. The article stated that the driver of this BMW was FEMALE.
Go scream at them !

Saturn drivers are very savvy consumers and consummate drivers with preternaturally fast reflexes and an aversion to talking on cell phones while eating fast food lunches behind the wheel of their affordable, safe, cool looking, awesome vehicles.

Do not believe Prof's characterization. It is pure, unadulterated poopy doop and without merit or any shred of truth.

I drive a Vue and resent the prejudicial characterization of Saturn drives!

What was a tractor trailer doing on Bloomfield Ave.?
Have you never been on Bloomfield Ave?

The other day I saw a Montclair cop drive by while talking on his cell phone, he was smiling it up.

The day before a Montclair cop DID NOT stop to let me cross at Watchung Plaza - check the security cameras, it's got to be on tape!

I drive a Saturn and crashed my car an hour after passing the driver's test back when I was 17 - The professor is wrong, we're all jerks driving Saturns.

nellie, if I had a dollar for everytime I've heard that from a woman, I'd be a very wealthy man indeed.

How unbelievably sad. All it takes is one second of distraction and, boom, lights out.

My prayers are with this woman and her family.

Silly me....I drive my tractor trailer on Bloomfield Ave. all the time.

Who the heck is Stiv Bators? I responded to Crank (and his/her Honda)

The Stiv Bators comment must have been erased but here's the scoop, Nellie. Stiv was in the seminal punk band The Dead Boys and later in The Lords of the New Church (aside: LONC did a fabbo cover of Madonna's Like A Virgin!). Stiv was in the John Waters film Polyester with Divine and Tab Hunter.

Sadly, Stiv died in Paris, France after being struck by a taxicab. He was able to walk into a doctor's office but the wait was too long and he went home. He died in his sleep from his injuries.

Stiv Bators

BTW-It's the Garden State Parkway that doesn't allow trucks.

Stiv Bators is my alter ego.

My Honda woulda slid right under that tractor trailer & come out the front end with nary a scratch.
