Free Audiobooks for TechnoGeeks

When I saw the sign in the Glen Ridge Library with pictures of iPods on it, promising free new audiobook downloads through a service called ListenNJnw, I was pretty stoked. The service is available to all members of BCCLS, which now includes Glen Ridge, Montclair and Bloomfield as member libraries. Since then, however, I’ve lost several hours of my life to downloading purgatory, and Overdrive Media Explorer still can’t find my iPhone. I guess, despite all the hours I log on my Mac, I’m just not geek enough. Still, I can hear Haruki Murakami’s “A Wild Sheep Chase” if I want to listen at my desk, or burn it to CD. I’m interested in seeing if anybody out there in Baristaville has mastered the art of the ListenNJnw download to iPod. If so, tell us in comments and please pass on any practical tips.
If you’re looking for a good audiobook, by the way, I highly recommend Barack Obama’s “Dreams From My Father,” which I listened to during a 7-hour trip back from central Virginia late last year. Not only is Obama a gifted writer with an interesting story to tell, he reads the book himself and does all the voices. You can reserve through the library service, on iTunes for $14.95 or audible.com for $18.17.

I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the “greatest 100 days EVER in the history of all Presidents of the United States of American” than with HIM reading from his first (or is it the second?) autobiography.
Just hearing his voice makes me warm.
    And his story?
Jeez… It’s almost worth the near 5 trillion in debt.
    Almost…
Hell, if you throw in a cover shot of him shirtless—–
    Priceless!

I also highly recommend the audio version of “Dreams from My Father.” If it wasn’t for that book on tape, we would not have http://obamasoundoff.com/” rel=”nofollow”>this .

I’ve used ListenNJ for many months, but not through an iPod (which was not supported at the time). I went out and bought a $30 mp3 player (the Zen Stone) and use it only for ListenNJ audiobooks. Quick, easy, no headaches.

Don’t forget to check out 2046 (the Wong Kar Wai movie) when you get a chance!

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
