The parking lot of Applegate’s was so crowded Sunday night, it looked like Memorial Day Weekend on the Garden State Parkway. Tom at Rita’s Ices in Bloomfield said he sold twice as many ices last Sunday as usual. Clearly, there’s a Pavlovian instinct that makes us gravitate toward quiescently frozen treats as soon as the mercury tops 90. Which brings us to one of our favorite topics.
Meanwhile, the other thing that happens in this weather is that girls bare their shoulders, a condition that school administrators find “challenging.”
As spring approaches and the weather warms up, we tend to have more challenges with students’ attire. I ask for your assistance in ensuring that your son or daughter dresses in a manner that is conducive to an instructional and professional environment. The full dress code is in the student handbook on pages 46 – 47. However, I would like to bring to your attention parts of the code that are challenging every spring:
* Clothing must not be unduly revealing or distracting. Attire must be sufficient to conceal undergarments. Hot pants, half-shirts or tops, … bare midriffs, low-cut or revealing tops, … see-through tops are only some examples of prohibited clothing
* No sunglasses, or heavily tinted glasses, except with a doctor’s approval.
In instances where inappropriate attire is worn, parents may be contacted and asked to bring appropriate clothing to school. Please understand that we are trying to reinforce students’ ability to differentiate between attire appropriate for professional locations – court, school, etc. and for places where informality is the norm – basketball court, beach, etc. As I have often told students when they wear inappropriate garb, they would never think of wearing such clothing to court, to their place of worship, to work, or even to the prom. Students’ behavior often follows how they dress – very informal, casual to dress up, formal. Thank you for your help in this matter.

I miss Grunings Ice Cream and Bonds.
I guess one has to be over 50 to recall these…
I like Applegates ice cream, but its expensive and service is always slow. The way it is set up, servers have to walk back and forth that long aisle to fill the order. I swear sometimes it seems like they’re going down the block and re-emerge 10 min. later.
I’m not a big fan of ice cream (give me potato chips any day instead for a treat) but I love the ice cream sodas at Applegate’s.
Holsten’s is our family favorite, and in fact my sons went there last night and brought back a treat for the mom and dad – what good boys! Of course it was easy for them when we pay.
Applegate is so overrated: the wait, even when there is barely a line, is overly long; the servers are always disgruntled; and the ice cream is only decent half of the time.
Rita’s is good if you want ice.
TCBY in Clifton always gives am ample portion.
But I’m still waiting to find a good ice cream location, or even a local gelato eatery.
Just had Applegate’s ice cream last night (butter pecan) and it was absolutely tasteless. It tasted like ice, no flavor and no pecans. The only thing that Applegate Farms has going for it is the farm theme.
TCBY is great. I used to love the Old Milk Barn in Pompton Lakes but sadly they closed their doors years ago.
Applegate Farms is gross. Ever read the nutritional information on their ice cream packages? Talk about artificial…
Can’t ice cream just be ice cream?!
I worked at Applegate farms for a year in 1998 when I was in High School. I did everything from Making icecream in the shed, painting the barn and farm equipment, to scooping ice cream. The service may be a little slow, but that’s usually because a few people a day want “hand packed gallons”, which is tough on the arms. By the time you wanted your two scoop bowl, I was exhausted.
We weren’t allowed to eat the food, unless we screwed up an order. So often times if I wanted a peanut butter ice cream milk shake, I’d make one for you first.
Its not a fast food place, and even though your stand at the counter, its still faster than sitting down at holsteins. Give the kids a break.
And please dont compare it to Ritas. Talk about artificial! There ice cream comes in a liquid bag and dumped into a machine!
I miss the Soda Pop Shop. Connie and Bobby were always very nice to my wife and me when we came in and the shakes and parfaits were to die for.
The only time I go to Applegate is when I know they have some of the Hershey’s brand ice cream because I think most of their in-house stuff is pretty gross or tasteless.
None of the Applegate haters have even mentioned the pure Montclair sceney-ness of Applegate Farms — i.e., “Hey, I just got back from two weeks in Nantucket!”
Screw that.
Mark & Julie’s in West Orange has the best ice cream in the area.
White chocolate mousse at TCBY. Big waffle cone. It’s like crack.*
