Be gentle with Whole Foods Montclair. They’ve only been tweeting for two days. Other local businesses have been at it longer. Here’s Copabananas on Twitter, here’s Peak Performances, here’s Rita’s Ices in Bloomfield, here’s us.
Of course, now is the moment where everybody jumps in and says how much they dislike Twitter, because of course that’s what people do. I went to a party a few weeks ago, in which one of the guests was going on and on about the virtues of Twitter, but slamming Facebook. Or was it the other way around? One of the social networking platforms was the best thing since sliced bread; the other was a total waste of time.
Twitterholic ranks the most popular tweeters in Montclair. One of my favorite local twitterers is Looky Daddy, who is as funny at 140 characters as he is at full blog length.
As he just tweeted:
It’s afternoons like today that make me wish I was rich and eccentric enough to take to bed for a few weeks.
Who can argue with that?

Social networking can be a vital, empowering, and extremely beneficial method of communicating among various groups of people who might not otherwise be able to make contact. But when it is promoted and practiced for little more value than its own meaningless existence it can be as annoying as the telemarketeers of old. IMHO Tweeting — and the constant cellphone use in supermarkets (“Hi! I’m aisle 6 now, approaching the stewed tomatoes section!”) — is as ridiculously banal as one can get. At least with Twitter, you don’t have to hear these less-than-useless, nevertheless profound, interchanges. Of course if the Twit-or or the Twit-ee happens to be texting while careering down Breakneck Hill steering an SUV with his or her knees, it could be annoying in a deeper, more meaningful way.
I have a FB because most of my friends and family have started using it in favor of Evite (which I still prefer). Other than that, I never update or check things that weren’t sent by e-mail notification.
I have a Live Journal account for much the same reason. Only, I update my LJ from time to time because I find the interface easy, the control of presentation better, and actually have the option to mark my musings as private if I don’t want the whole world dot see them.
I don’t have a Twitter account and don’t read others’ postings. One sentence long blog postings? Meh.
I hate Twitter. Really, what’s the point? Do these people really think we care about what they are doing all the time?
I don’t “get” Twitter, either, even though I have an account (LabLover). Facebook offers the same type of platform and is a lot more fun IMHO. Plus I always get these stupid emails telling me that “So-and-so is following you on Twitter” and I never heard of the person.
Facebook has its bugs and issues but I did manage to connect with kids from my sleep-away camp from 40 years ago (we’re even having a reunion in October!)
I have a Twitter account, although for the first year or two of Twitter being around I refused to use the platform because I had only come across boring Twitter accounts and thought that’s how they all were. Then a few of my friends started using it and I liked the fact that even though they had all gotten too lazy to use Livejournal in their 20′s, at least I could keep tabs on them via their daily Twitter updates. Then Mark got an account (markedly) and I caved.
Yesterday my Twitter posts followed me along a magical journey titled “worst case of the runs I’ve ever had in my life” where I kept on complaining about what pain I was in (super fun for all my followers!). Today’s theme is TMMI, Too Much Mister Information – showing the not so cute side of my super cute dog, Mister. Here’s a sneak peak: http://twitter.com/stopkatie/status/1805726050
Also, one thing I really, really like about Twitter is the ability to post/share iPhone photos quickly.
Something I don’t like about Twitter is that it has made me a very lazy blogger.
I have FB, not Twitter.
I have a friend who still does not even have a computer..It’s strange to know someone without an email address…She said she will hold out as long as she can…
Who has time to check-in on all these different sites? Send me an email and I’ll see it …
OMG what vacuous twits inhabit this blog.
