Montclair police tracked down a man who made a very lewd overture toward a lady bartender at Egan & Sons last week.
During the course of the investigation, detectives identified a suspect who was later identified by the bartender as the offender. Carson Mullen, 23, was taken into custody at his Cooper Avenue home, without incident. Mullen was charged with criminal sexual contact and lewdness.
While searching Mullen, detectives found a bag of marijuana along with a driver’s license belonging to a woman living in Nutley. When contacted, the Nutley woman said her purse had been stolen from Egan’s sometime in March.
Mulllen was charged with possession and receiving stolen property.

Folks in Bloomfield getting ready for a garage sale this summer might want to think about asking a few more dollars for that old candy dish.
Bloomfield Township recently raised the cost of a garage sale permit from $10 to $25.
Unless you’ve got a basement full of vintage comic books and colonial furniture, that’ll take a pretty big bite out of your profits.
Especially when you compare that to the cost of holding a garage sale in other parts of Baristaville: $5 in Montclair and Belleville, and just $2 in Glen Ridge.
I went down to Bloomfield town hall to find out the reason behind this 150 per cent fee hike.
Municipal staff threw up their hands and directed me to members of council, none of whom have emailed me back. But one township employee suggested they were trying to clamp down on garage sales that seem to last all year.
However, the nice lady in front of me in the permits line guessed that Bloomfield junk is just more valuable than it used to be.
UPDATE: Bloomfield director of community development Glenn Domenick just called. He says the township recently reviewed and raised many of its permit fees, simply saying they hadn’t been updated for several years.

A tipster sent us a very detailed accounting of a police car crashing near Nauna’s in Montclair on Tuesday night.
We followed up with Montclair police Chief Sabagh who confirmed there was an accident involving a police car while en route to a call. The operator of the vehicle that failed to yield to that police car was issued one motor vehicle summons. The video of the accident will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

In an email blast to families late yesterday, acting principal Marcus Rhaney disclosed that a Watchung student was diagnosed with swine flu. The student is the first confirmed case in Montclair and the third in Essex County…
Dear Families,
At approximately 4:30 this afternoon, I was informed that a Watchung kindergarten student was diagnosed with swine flu (H1N1). This particular student was absent two days prior to Memorial Day weekend (May 20th and 21st) and yesterday.
The Superintendent’s office immediately dispatched personnel from the District’s Buildings and Grounds Department to Watchung to disinfect all areas of the school. An industrial strength disinfectant was used to sanitize the building.
I checked the school’s absentee report from May 21st, 22nd and 26th and have concluded that there has been no spike in the number of student absentees during that time period.
The student in question has recovered fully. Furthermore, the student does not have any siblings.
I would like to encourage every family member to remain diligent in monitoring flu like symptoms in your children. If your child exhibits any flu like symptoms, please be certain to take your child to a doctor immediately.
The Superintendent’s office will be releasing a statement on the district website tomorrow morning.
The safety of your children has been, and always will be, my greatest priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Marcus Rhaney
A statement from Montclair Schools Superintendent was added to the website this morning.

A 29-year-old Verona man and Newark woman who worked in a doctor’s office, both having recovered from the virus, were among three cases confirmed in Essex County. The third, in Montclair, is “under investigation” according to a release by Susan Portuese, Montclair’s health officer, and no specific information is being released. There is indications that a child was the third case. Portuese may not be releasing details, but Mayor Jerry Fried, in addition to asking folks to wash their hands, had this to say. From the Star Ledger…
Montclair’s mayor, Jerry Fried, said it’s his understanding that a child in Montclair came down with the virus. Fried did not know the child’s age or whether the child attends a public school.
There’s nothing on the Montclair public school’s website about a new case; however, a commenter adds this to the story.

Montclair Police are investigating the report of multiple gunshots on Mission Street last evening, shortly after midnight.
An East Orange resident visiting family heard the shots while out walking the dogs. When he heard the gunshots, he ran from the scene, tripped on the sidewalk and fractured his wrist. The man came to Montclair police headquarters later in the day to report the incident.
Officers later on the scene recovered five spent shell casings. Two vehicles parked on Mission Street were struck. The first car, closer to Elmwood Avenue had a bullet round through the trunk that penetrated the front seat and was recovered near the floor board. The second car, which police say was further south on Mission Street was hit on the driver’s side mirror. “Thankfully, the vehicles were unoccupied and no people were injured,” says Lt. James Carlucci. Anyone with information should call Detective James Milano at 973-509-4726.
