It’s all part of a weekend extravaganza planned by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, July 17-19, featuring carnival rides, wine tasting, zeppoles and other indulgences plus a street fair with 40 vendors.
We’re helping them put out a call to aspiring musicians, singers, comedians and all types of performers to enter in the competition. The winner will get a 30-minute show on Channel 34.

Eight men, including three from Bloomfield, were arrested during a Wednesday night bust that officials say shut down a prescription drug ring operating in Essex and Warren counties. Prosecutors say oxycontin, a highly addictive pain killer, was the primary drug fueling the 1,000 pill-per-week business according to a report on NJ.com.
Bloomfielders Anthony Giammona, 57, and Ronald P. Richie, 45, both of Delevan Avenue and Richard Faranda, 57, of James Street, allegedly provided prescription drugs to accused ringleader Frank J. Youths Go Vegetarian, Sometimes Alone

Thursday, Jun 25, 2009 2:30pm  |  COMMENTS (17)

IMG_1528.JPGHayden Kline, 14, of Montclair, became vegetarian earlier this year and he remembers exactly when. “Right after the SuperBowl,” says Hayden, “the second of February.” He also knows exactly why. “I ate a bunch of ribs that day, and then I felt kinda sick because I remembered a video I saw online about how ribs were made.” That overdose, along with the nightmare video clip, were enough to convert him to a diet that excludes all animal meat.
Hayden isn’t alone among youth who decide one sunshiny day, often against the rest of their family’s inclination, and for similar ethical, environmental or other reasons, to swear off meat altogether, often fish too, which Hayden incidentally never developed a taste for.
For the rest of his family who aren’t vegetarian, his choice sometimes poses a challenge.

Save Upper Montclair, The Tudors Edition

Thursday, Jun 25, 2009 9:12am  |  COMMENTS (27)

tudorparadise.jpgThe old Olympic shop recently shed its scaffolding for the big reveal: a Tudor facade so authentic, you could almost imagine von Trapp kids sticking their heads out the window and breaking into song. Why limit Upper Montclair’s Tudor appeal to that stretch between Bellevue and Lorraine on Valley? Katherine Loscalzo wants more of that Alpine village charm extended up the street, where Michael Pavel, the same developer who brought you the Olympic’s new looks, is proposing a multi-use complex on Lorraine Avenue, west of the Lukoil gas station. According to Loscalzo, the new development, if completed, will be the largest commercial development in Upper Montclair.
Loscalzo has organized an effort to save Upper Montclair’s historic character. You may have seen her flyers at Starbucks; she’s also set up this email address for folks interested in joining this effort. “Upper Montclair has a strong sense of place. It feels like a small community with a village-like character,” writes Loscalzo. “This sense of place is part of Montclair’s’ value; attracting and retaining residents, and therefore, creating business growth and long-term success for the community. One bad development can destroy this forever.” She’s urging residents to attend the planning board meeting on July 13th, 7:30 p.m., when the board will vote to approve or request alterations for the project. Click through to the jump to see the changes to the development Loscalzo and other concerned neighbors are requesting and a rendering.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
