Coffee, Muffins And…Crude Graffiti?

Thursday, Jun 25, 2009 8:46am  |  COMMENTS (14)

Remember when the restaurant at Upper Montclair Train Station was scheduled to open months ago, possibly for the holidays? That never happened and commuters have been wondering about the hold-up for some time. Today a reader writes to report a new development…

After all the bumbling they got the station up 3 months ago but have yet to open. I was patient when the makeshift shelter had some animal’s droppings (maybe human) left there to slowly wash away over the last week but today’s grafitti on the unopened station has finally got me. Everyone in this town is looking to fix quote un quote problems that in earlier times you just dealt with while this gross mismanagement now spreads well over two councils’ and one manager’s oversight.
I will call the city today but I thought you might have more luck getting the grafitti cleaned before it becomes the new derelict station in town that gets tagged everynight.

Iran Vigil Planned for Tonight

Wednesday, Jun 24, 2009 11:31am  |  COMMENTS (20)

If you’ve questioned the value of Twitter, the past week of videos, tweets and photos sent from inside Iran, like this one by negaratduke, may have changed your mind. And it’s hard not to be moved by the coverage of the death of Neda, the young Iranian woman who was shot dead during a protest on Saturday. Rallies in support of the rebellion in Iran have taken place throughout the US, and rising Montclair High School junior Katie Gifford has planned one for our area: a candlelight vigil and rally tonight at the Church Street stage area corner of Church Street and Bloomfield Ave in Montclair. Participants are urged to bring candles and posters and wear green. 8:30 to 10:30 pm.

Woman Jailed for Alleged Shoplifting at Pathmark; Youth Assaulted

Wednesday, Jun 24, 2009 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (30)

A woman was held in custody at the Pathmark Supermarket at Lackawanna Plaza on Sunday afternoon (June 21st) for allegedly shoplifting. Before police arrived at the scene, store security officials reported that the woman, Charade Jenkins, 44, of Montclair, had become aggressive. She allegedly scratched a police officer in the face and kicked him in the groin, along with kicking another officer in the knee.
As she was physically subdued and handcuffed, Jenkins’ husband, Donald Couram, 52, also of Montclair, allegedly struck two police officers with his fist before he, too, was handcuffed.
Jenkins was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon and shoplifting goods worth $346. Couram was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and obstruction of law. Both are in jail, with bail set at $75,000 bond and $7,500 cash each. The two officers, whose injuries include facial lacerations and a sprained knee and thumb, will resume work after being medically cleared.
Police are also investigating an incident that occurred just after midnight on Monday (June 22nd), when a Montclair youth aged 20 was allegedly assaulted and robbed at the intersection of Orange Road and Draper Terrace. The youth was approached by six males and was asked, “Are you Hakmob?”

Benson Street Station Sold to Experienced Renovators

Tuesday, Jun 23, 2009 4:50pm  |  COMMENTS (14)

benson st moriartys.jpgGood news for neighbors of the Benson Street train station in Glen Ridge: The dilapidated structure has finally been sold by NJ Transit — for $150,100 or $100 above asking — to a Glen Ridge couple with experience restoring a total wreck.
NJ Transit said the property changed hands last Thursday, and was purchased by Richard and Edna Moriarty of Glen Ridge. The same couple bought a blighted property on Woodland Avenue in Glen Ridge in 1998, which had been seized by the town under eminent domain, and successfully restored it the condition shown above, right. The house won the Glen Ridge Historical Society’s preservation award in 2001.

Burgdorff Brand Will Be History

Tuesday, Jun 23, 2009 2:30pm  |  COMMENTS (9)

UPDATED 5 pm.
Word spread today through local realtors that New Jersey-based Burgdorff ERA is merging with Coldwell Banker, effective immediately, and that the Burgdorff brand will no longer be a name in New Jersey real estate. A press release from NRT LLC, parent company of both real estate firms, said that seven of Burgdorff’s 13 offices will be rebranded as Coldwell Banker, and the other six will close. The Schweppe Burgdorff will survive as a second Coldwell office in Montclair. Coldwell already operates an office on Bellevue Ave. in Upper Montclair.
The two offices will be referred to as Coldwell’s Montclair office and Coldwell’s Montclair Schweppe office. The Burgdorff name will be dropped altogether.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
