If you’re around town today, take advantage of the fair weather to drop by Whole Foods Market Montclair, which is having a mini farmer’s market today with Matarazzo Farms of Caldwell and Amish Country Bakery. They’ll be selling produce outside the store today from 1 to 5 pm, and returning for the same hours, on Tuesday July 14 and Tuesday July 28.
For those of you feel that life has lost all color since you don’t need to check the website 538 daily, here’s your chance to relive the thrilling 2008 election campaign. Montclair scribe Eric Boehlert, whose previous book “Lapdogs” condemned the press for its soft treatment of the Bush administration, has a new book. “The Bloggers on the Bus: How the Internet Changed Politics and the Press,” whose name, of course, alludes to Timothy Crouse’s “Boys on the Bus,” about reporting of the 1972 presidential campaign.
If it’s been too long since you’ve heard about Jeremiah Wright or Todd Palin, you’ll want to go see Boehlert tonight at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Montclair, where he’ll be speaking and signing books, courtesy of BlueWave NJ. The event starts at 7:30 pm.
Before David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Hank Kingsley, there was Johnny Carson — along with trusty sidekick and live laugh track Ed McMahon. McMahon died today at 86. If you’re old enough to remember the Tonight Show, leave your favorite Carson or McMahon memory in the comments.
Clifton police arrested a Montclair man yesterday after he alleged attacked a police sergeant with a gutter spike. The man, Gian Carty, 37, was walking on the side of the highway at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 21 when the sergeant came up to find out what he was doing there. According to NorthJersey.com, the officer was protected by his bulletproof vest. Carty, still in jail, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a deadly weapon.
True, so far today it hasn’t rained…yet. And there have even been a few moments of bright spring-like sunshine. (Nothing resembling summer, though, even if today is the second official day). Still, the weather gods are being capricious and rather moody. I could see my own shadow in front of the Glen Ridge Post Office shortly before 3 pm today. And then I couldn’t. And then I could.
Has the weather been getting you down? Here’s your open thread for Seasonal Affective Disorder, Iran or whatever else is on your mind.
For the Colbert-holic: on 93.9 FM right now, “Fresh Air” host Terry Gross interviews Colbert Report executive producer Allison Silverman on the comedian’s week in Iraq. Listen here or download later.
Okay, canine lovers (we’re talking to you, Mrs. Martta.) What do you really know about the secret thoughts of your dog? Is that a squirrel that has him straining at the leash, or a lady poodle with a certain va-va-va-boom? The Brookdale Park Conservancy has found two local dog whisperers to entertain and educate you at their June membership meeting tomorrow night.
Jeff Coltenback, a canine nutrition consultant, is the owner of Paradise Pet, a holistic pet shop in Bloomfield. Fernando Camacho, owner of FernDog LLC, specializes in canine communication and dog pack behavior.
Gloria Machnowski of Morningside Road in Verona got steamed last month when the town removed 12 mature trees from Morningside Road, a street she walks down daily to take her kids to school, in order to repair sidewalks. Even worse, in echoes of Brookdale Park, the town added “service roads” (i.e. concrete slabs) on the grass between each resident’s sidewalks and the street. It was all enough to turn Machnowski into an activist.
The neighbors tried it all to stop it. Letters, e-mails, phone calls and visits to every single meeting and authority in town were not enough to turn off the chainsaw or convince the backhoe driver to give our trees a break!
This Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the tragic murder of Monica Paul at the Glenridge Ave. YMCA in Montclair, and her family and friends are organizing a walk to raise awareness of domestic violence and support for Monica’s Law. The walk is planned for Friday, June 26 at 5 pm at Glenfield Park in Montclair and participants are urged to wear purple.
A trial for Paul’s estranged ex-husband, Kenneth Duckett, is planned for July, pending a mental evaluation. Duckett was indicted by a grand jury in February.
Tom Biro, who regulars here know as Baristanet’s chief tech guy, got married on Saturday in Holmdel to the lovely Lara Antonenko, and of course he did it in inimitable Biro fashion: wearing a white necktie with his black tux, tweeting in the limo on the way to the church and on the way back, having his own twitter hashmark (#biro_nup) so those unencumbered with being the stars of the event could tweet the couple’s nuptials as well and changing into Converse sneakers after the first dance. As one friend said: “#biro_nup was pretty historic all-around.”
Here’s the happy couple dancing their first, to “I Will Love You So” by Rivers Cuomo. Let’s all raise a cup (even if it’s Starbucks) to wish them a wonderful life together (and perhaps just a tiny bit of privacy.)
