I'll be there...anyone eles racing?
I'm unable to race tonight MM, as I'll be hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Or going to Buenos Aires.
But I'll be rooting you on, in spirit.
Drink lots of water!
Just as long as you remain properly clothed along the Appalachian Trail, croiagusanam...
For the runners out there, I can only wish them fast times and not a heck of a lot of dehydration.
Ironically, this race is why I won't be getting any cardio tonight.
(my gym is on Broad St and my knees have prevented me from doing anything other than using an elliptical for a couple of years, now)
This race is a major pain. Why it's not held on a weekend I'll never understand. For those who live off the section of Broad Street which is closed it causes quite a number of problems, especially for those on dead-end streets. I'm sure I'm in the minority so don't waste any time bashing me. I'm just venting.
I'm not racing tonight, but I'll be there cheering on MrBirdRex! Enjoy it, everyone.
It was a great night. Bill Rodgers and Tom Fleming were there to sign autographs and now I have a bib number that I'll cherish forever. I missed getting 3rd in my age group by 19 seconds...grrr! But the weather wasn't that bad. High humidity, yes, but at 7:30 PM, it was high in the 70s and not beastly hot as Sunset Classic always tends to be. It was great to see a lot of my club members there.
For its detractors, remember that the race brings much needed funds into Bloomfield and that can't be a bad thing.
Sure, it snarls traffic but it would be even more of a hardship to do that on the weekend when there are many more people out and about. I'm glad that the weather held up for the runners. I've lived in the North End for 10 years now and it always seemed like the skies opened up during the Classic.

No, it's not a bad thing. But it would bring just as much money in if not more on a weekend and not cause untold aggravation during a week night rush hour. I have lived in that section of town for a long time there were many nights I couldn't get to my own house or apartment after work because the road was closed off. Two years ago it took me over an hour to get to a meeting at town hall, a trip that would normally take 15 minutes. Traffic on Ridgwood Avenue was awful. Last year my physical therapy was cancelled because the place was on a stretch of Broad that would be closed and the businesses in the building were told the parking lot should be emptied by 5:30 so they had to cancel appointments.
I have no problem with the race or the fundraising aspect, but as a resident of Bloomfield and tax payer I do resent being inconvenienced because of it, especially since it could just as easily be held on a weekend when most people are more flexible.
JMHO though. I'm not the only one who feels this way, BTW - but it seems I am the only one willing to voice my opposition to this 'tradition'.
