This email blast went out to Montclair High School parents...
Unfortunately there is a problem with the report cards that were mailed yesterday. There was an error in the printing process and many of the report cards are missing grades with the exception of the final grades. We are aware of the problem and it is being worked on. The report cards will be reprinted and remailed when the corrections have been made. We apologize for any inconvenience and want to assure you the problem will be corrected as soon as possible. Thank you.
The only missing grades I remember were the ones you could make disappear with Eraser mate pens. Good times...
Meanwhile next year, you'll be able to check your child's grades and attendance in real time...
Dear MHS Parents/Guardians/Caregivers:
During the 2009-2010 school year, Montclair High School will begin to transition to an on-line grading system using our student database StarBase. The on-line feature will be a parent/student web-based system (Star Portal), allowing you real-time access to grades and attendance data. More information will follow, prior to the opening of school in September.Sincerely,
Frank R. Alvarez, Ed.D.

... and it is being worked on.
My high school English teacher is rolling over in his grave... never use passive voice!
Oh Liz, you probably got straight As.
And Alvarez just got a new 5-year contract.
Is this a comedy of errors or what? I have a crisp hundred-dollar bill right here that says my 12 year-old grandson could hack into StarBase with a paperclip, a piece of chewing gum, and maybe some duct tape in three, maybe four minutes. Who needs straight A's in any other subject but comp sci these days?
"Dude, Where's My Grades"? - I think, Liz, that not even the abject devotion of walleroo would spare you from a failing mark for the grammatical imprecision of this headline.
And I suggest "Dude, Where's My Dignity?" for the title of a dissection of walleroo's lovelorn semi-stalking if it ever comes to an actual restraining order.
Why is a story about a black bear assulting a man for his sandwich in Barista Kids, while a story about school children's report cards on the main site?
Got no place to fade, got no coat
I'm on the rollin' river in a jerkin' boat
Tryin' to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity
Somehow, cathar "Wherefore Art Thou, Grades" doesn't ring true either.

Thank you Conan...I've had my first genuine laugh in weeks...

Bueller? Bueller?
Conan - I remember when they implemented the first version of StarBase... I asked a very pointed computer security question to the DBA at the time, to which the answer was "well, yeah, I suppose that would be possible". I later found out that when he brought the potential security issue to their attention they wanted to have me arrested (for pointing it out). The only good thing was that looking at my grades you knew I didn't change 'em... I did consider giving every student in the school straight A's though... I've been out of the schools for a while, but somehow I doubt the newer versions of this are much more secure than the old one. They are going to be a lot more vulnerable since I'm sure they are implementing this public (web based?) version in an "easy" way rather than a "secure" way...

(yeah, there's a blank for driver's ed). I hate being that guy to brag about my kid, but I am very proud of my appleteen!
Why don't they just email grades to parents to save a lot of time and money?
Just some advice (feel free to ignore) to parents of the class of 2010. The most important person in your child's school life will
be their college guidance counselor. The work these folks do for college bound students is truly amazing. And if your son or daughter has the good fortune of getting the fantastic (and this is not hyberbole -- she's that great. Both my sons had her) Nedra Clark as their college advisor, they (and you, as their parent) are very, very fortunate. Thank you Ms. Clark for everything!
Goodbye Montclair High! There's lots of bitching and moaning (understandable) about this school, but I have (almost) always been thrilled with the education that my boys received. And just for the record, we will not be leaving Montclair even though our kids are now out of the school system. Montclair rocks!
Deborah,
You are thrilled with the education your sons received at MHS but all the merit goes to the counselors? What about the TEACHERS? My daughters were assigned to a series of counselors who offered almost NO help to them. They were however aided by Scott White and Ms Sharples who stepped in to replace 'missing' or 'not hired' counselors assigned to my students. I would say that TEACHERS were responsible for all and any positive experiences my daughters had with MHS. Thanks to Ms. Kalacheva, Mr Green, Ms Cella, Mr Morgan, Mr Clifford, Mr Cleerdin, Ms Nagorka, Mr Swinski, Mr Casazza and Mr. (I call him Dr) Rodgers.
Congrats Appletony & Appleteen!!!
hs neighbor,
You didn't read my post. I commented on all the work the guidance counselors did to assist seniors with college admission. Why so snarky? I was giving a special shout-out to the underappreciated college guidance counselors (their work load is beyond words).
As for the teachers, they were almost uniformly terrific (which I have said many times in the past couple of years on Baristanet). But my post wasn't about the teachers.
There are only two (or maybe three) college guidance counselors.
All the students (seniors) are assigned to them, regardless of their earlier counselors (who, by the way, still address class changes etc. in the senior year).
That's good news, apple, congrats.
I did read your post. "The MOST important person in your child's school life...." And my post was not meant to be snarky. I simply asked a ? about the teachers. I know the counselors have a tough job but so do the teachers. HS teachers teach up to 120 kids everyday. The counselors may be assigned 300 students? and work with them on average for each student how many hours? I know my daughter probably received a total of 5 to 10 hours in 4 years from several counselors but her teachers gave her more than 130 hours each! By the way, I am a teacher who taught 250 kids this year and I knew every name, face and more by the end of the first week. I have never heard a kid say "my favorite counselor is....". Not once!
