Reported Burglary at Wat-Chung Chinese Restaurant
Police received a report of a burglary overnight on June 26 at 10.55am at Wat-Chung Chinese Restaurant in Watchung Plaza. The owner closed the restaurant at about 10.30pm on June 25, and had locked the front and rear doors. At about 10.45am on June 26, upon arriving at the restaurant, he discovered the storm door open and the rear door ajar, with the cash register inside wide open and all its currency missing. No other items were missed. The front door remained locked and windows were intact. Police observed damage to the rear door but the suspected crime scene could not be processed as the arrival of employees had contaminated it. Police are investigating the case. Staff of nearby stores reported no suspicious activity or were closed at the time of the alleged burglary.

On June 28, a homeowner on Essex Avenue reported that during the early hours of the
day, someone entered the detached garage of the home and allegedly took a Calloway Big Bertha Iron Golf Club set, in a black and orange bag, which was worth $2,000. The owner believed he had locked the garage doors at 7.00pm on June 27, but noticed at 12.00pm on June 28 that the doors were open. No other items were removed and a neighbour didn't see or hear any suspicious activity.
Burglary at Cambridge Road Residence
On June 28, at 3.39pm, police were dispatched to a single family home where a burglary was reported. The owner, a woman, returned home at 3.30pm that day and discovered a break-in. The kitchen, first floor office and second floor bedroom were in disarray and her Dell Latitude laptop computer, valued at $2,500, was missing from the office. The basement apartment of her tenant of 4-6 months was also in disarray. The tenant, also a woman, reported that she had left the premises at 11.45am on June 28. Upon checking her possessions, she found two US Postal money orders missing from her room, one for $780 and another for $1,000 - both placed in an envelope and made out to the home owner for rent payment. The rear kitchen window on the north side appeared to be the point of entry and exit. The owner said she left the window ajar and unlocked. Police are investigating.
Arrest after Car Window Broken near Lackawanna Plaza
Officers were dispatched in the evening of June 28 to the area of 35 Lackawanna Plaza on a report that three white males had allegedly broken the window of a car parked at the lot of John's Automotive. The caller reported that one of the men was wearing a camouflage baseball cap. As an MPD officer drove west on Glenridge Ave approaching Grove St, he saw three white males, one with a camouflage baseball cap. The caller had followed the men and approached the officer. He alleged that he saw the cap-wearer punch the driver's side window of a 1992 Chevy Metro and appeared to remove a cell phone from the vehicle.
The officer told the individuals - named as Michael Bruno, Joseph Flannery and Kevin Brady - why they were being detained. Flannery, who was wearing a camouflage baseball cap, was bleeding from the right hand and said he had slipped and cut it on a rock. He then quickly recanted that story and admitted punching the car's window, but claimed it was already broken and that he was drunk. A warrant check on all three revealed that Bruno had a Carlstadt township warrant for $1,915, while Brady had a Belleville warrant for $500 and one out of Newark for $100. Flannery had no warrants but was arrested and charged with criminal mischief and released on a summons. A cell phone found on his person was his own. Bruno and Brady were both remanded while waiting to be picked up, the former by Carlstadt police and Brady by Belleville police.

Golf clubs cost $2000?
Just another reason for me to hate golf.
KatebirdRex - clubs can cost a lot more than that!
As for the basement tenant, sounds to me like someone is trying to get out of paying the rest of last month's rent and the next month's rent using this unfortunate incident.
