primary_cell_web.jpgNJ Sen. Bob Menendez is behind a bill that if passed would make driving while texting illegal nation wide.
The bill would require all states to ban drivers from sending texts or email messages, or risk federal highway funds. In Jersey, a recent poll shows NJ drivers have increased texting behavior.
What else should be banned while driving?

New Jersey State Council on The Arts released its list of 2010 grant recipients, doling out a total of $14,418,665. In our area, Montclair Art Museum received $242,948, down from last year’s grant of $296,278; Jazz House Kids in West Orange received a first-time grant of $5,700 for its “Generations for Jazz” program. The highest grant recipients saw declines of close to 20% or more from last year.
The council now has a local connection: the Star Ledger reports that Sharon Burton Turner of Montclair is the new chairwoman.

Residents of the neighborhood of Clark Street, on the Bloomfield-Glen Ridge border, woke up this morning to discover that someone had played a game of bumper cars overnight. Here’s what a tipster wrote in:

Last night a car created a path of destruction in Bloomfield and Glen Ridge. I am not sure where it started, but it continued down Thomas Street where a driver hit no less than 3 parked cars. The driver turned onto Clark Street in Glen Ridge where they hit another car. He/she continued onto Bloomfield Ave where they crashed in front of the Lee Miles auto center on Bloomfield Ave near Liberty Street.

Just two cars, according to Glen Ridge Police Chief John Magnier, who wrote:

Soul Grooves Tonight in Little Falls

Tuesday, Jul 28, 2009 4:45pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

little falls concert.jpgIf you’re in the mood for some nostalgic music in a cozy park that overflows with small town vibes, you need go no further tonight than Little Falls and its 2nd Annual Free 2009 Summer in the Park Concert Series at Main Street and Wilmore Road.
Most of the concert goers seemed to arrive by foot since we were able to park half a block away at 7:10. A well preserved WW II tank is the park’s centerpiece along with the gazebo. Local vendors were aplenty including Fine Grind’s coffee and pastries, craftspeople and face painters for the kids. The Gazebo Concerts are on alternate Thursdays from 7 PM to 8:30 PM but the raindate for last week’s show is tonight. (For info call 973-812-7916)
Tonight will be Soul Groove “Dance, Pop and Soul hits of the last four decades.”
~~~~~Thursday, August 6th The Dapper Dans of Harmony (Barbershop Harmony)
~~~~~Thursday, August 20th Big Jeff and the Bouncy People “Songs and Fun for Young Children.”

A Mom’s Life

Kristen Kemp is moving on Friday (imagine that with three little kids!), organizing a backyard camp and trying to decide if she should shell out $100 to see Fountains of Wayne. No wonder her eyes look a little glazed over in this recent picture. I think I’ll slip out to the pool and contemplate her exhaustion. Go see what it is to be a mother these days over at Barista Kids.

Bloodettes Busted

Tuesday, Jul 28, 2009 3:11pm  |  COMMENTS (7)

Essex County Prosecutors announced today a major roundup of 43 gang members affiliated with a female-led division of the Bloods, alleged to be selling $50,000 of illegal drugs weekly in Newark, East Orange, Orange and Montclair. Operation Bloodette, as it was called, yielded a major stash of drugs, with a street value of $133,000:

62 ounces of PCP, 13.3 grams of heroin (266 decks), 54 grams of cocaine, and 36 grams of marijuana, with a total estimated street value of $133,000. In addition, four fully-loaded handguns, 138 rounds of ammunition, and more than $21,000 in cash were seized. It is alleged that the operation was distributing more than $50,000 worth of narcotics per week or more than $2.6 million per year.

The alleged gang leaders are Iyesha Harrison, 25, of East Orange, and Tyesha Stephens, 30, of Newark. Jasmain Roe, 20, of Bloomfield, was also arrested, as was Gail Ramsammy, 34, of Montclair. Ramsammy, you may recall, got busted last October when Montclair police didn’t like the way her companion was driving and noticed neither driver nor passenger was wearing a seatbelt. Police said at the time that Ramsammy was trying to hide a bottle of Leak down her pants, resisted arrest and had to be subdued with a blast of pepper spray.

Protestor Alleges Unfair Hiring and Poor Construction

Tuesday, Jul 28, 2009 2:20pm  |  COMMENTS (30)

If you’ve driven by the construction site of the new Washington Street School in Montclair and wondered what the signs are all about, here’s your answer. All the signs come from John Washington, a Montclair construction worker, who claims that the $35 million construction project is not following affirmative action guidelines and that work on the building is sloppy. “If my Dad and some of the oldtimers could see some of the blockwork,” Washington asserts, “they would turn over in their graves.”
The Montclair schools have not responded to our requests for an interview, but business administrator Dana Sullivan told the Montclair Times that its contractor was pre-qualified by the state.

Montclair Street Crime Up 30 Percent

Tuesday, Jul 28, 2009 12:33pm  |  COMMENTS (44)

substation.jpgThere have been four armed robberies in Montclair in the past two weeks, the most recent taking place around 3:30 am today, when someone forced a person waiting for a bus at Bloomfield and Gates Avenue into an alley and pulled a gun on them, then took the victim’s bag.
Because of the recent spate of guns on the street, we decided to interview Montclair Police Chief David Sabagh, who confirmed what we were seeing anecdotally. “Street crime is up about 30 percent,” he said. “It is a big concern. It is alarming people, certainly.”
The spike refers to the first six months of 2009 compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, overall crime is down 5 percent for the same period.
crime area.jpg Most of the street crime is taking place in the Bloomfield Avenue area stretching from Willow Street to Mission Street, Sabagh said. As it happens, budget cuts forced the police department to close its Lackawanna Substation (show above), almost exactly a year ago. The crime area is shown in pink in this map, and the former substation marked with an asterisk. Among the projects eliminated along with the department’s community policing effort was the Gang Resistance Education and Training Program (GREAT), which brought DARE-type prevention programs into Montclair High School.
The police force is also down from a high of 118 officers to 105, Sabagh said.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
