"I said a hip hop, the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop, a you don't stop the rock it to the bang bang boogie, say up jumped the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat."
Familiar lyrics to many and possible fodder for local author Pam Satran's How Not to Act Old blog, the Sugar Hill Gang, of Rapper's Delight fame (see above lyrics) is coming to the 'burbs.
Montclair High School has tapped them as the headline act for an all-day music festival, Rockin' In The Suburbs, on July 25, the proceeds of which will all go towards building a recording studio at MHS.
With the Sugar Hill Gang's presence, the school is hoping to lure a crowd to showcase
local talent comprised mostly of high school bands but also including 'old fogey Montclairites' like the Flemtones. Tickets, at $10 apiece, will go on sale here from July 3 at 4pm, as well as at select Montclair businesses from July 6, details of which can be found on the website over the July 4 weekend.
There's more information here about the event, which is organized by two high school students, Dillon Rand and Connor Smith, and science teacher Todd Smith (Connor's dad) from Renaissance School.
